• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I am interested in picking up a Unication G5 based on the things I have read here on RR and have a question. The specs for the UHF version list four different bands from 330 - 520 MHz. Can the UHF band be changed in software after I own it or is it fixed so I need to be very careful about which one I buy?

Thanks

thank you

Thanks for the quick reply. I thought that was the case, it means I need to think very carefully about my needs before buying one.

I had hoped that since the device is an SDR that the band could be changed. On the positive side maybe that means that there are hardware filters specific to the UHF frequencies specified and that can potentially lead to better rejection of unwanted frequencies.

True. I have the VHF version and before buying had to make sure which systems I needed it for. You are on the right path.

Also understand that the VHF and UHF versions use an internal loop antenna. The external antenna is for 7/800 only. I don't have any issues receiving trunked UHF systems anywhere inside the County I'm in but if you are looking for out of County coverage it will fade out quicker than 7/800 due to the antenna. On 7/800 even with the stubby I can hear neighboring trunked systems with the G5 in my cup holder and you'll just laugh when you put it up next to a Whistler or Uniden scanner on the same system.

The G5 bands are "hard coded". For the Public Safety UHF, you will be looking for the UHF-D pager, which covers 450 - 520 Mhz. You will not be able to change the band splits via PPS.
