• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

The frequencies I know I would monitor on UHF analog are in the 453 MHz range, so either range works for me.

Thinking out of the box, though, which UHF band do you find works best for you on the G5: 400-470 or 450-520?

EDIT: I should add that I'm debating between the Phase 1 or Phase 2 model. It would nice to know that if I ordered a Phase 1 model this late in the game if I would get the Phase 2 firmware for less (or free). I know only David can answer that definitively.

Depends on where you live and visit. The higher split if you live or travel near T-band metro areas. The low split if you live near the affected Canadian areas (eg Buffalo, NY) or are a ham (70cm).

Travel is generally to DC area and TN. I’m a ham but don’t care about monitoring the ham bands.

Yup - depends on where you are (or will be) and what you want to listen to. From my experience, most of what I'd want to monitor is 380s, 405ish, and 450-460. Of course, the dilemma is that a tough decision needs to be made. I know there is some public safety on 480s (west coast at least)...

I think the offer right now is (was? maybe expired) if you buy a Unication, you'll get the Phase 2 for free... I'm not sure what you mean by debating between the Phase 1 or Phase 2 model. Phase 2 is the same radio - just a firmware update (eventually). The Phase 2 firmware upgrade is reported to be an (up to) $150 option....

I was referring to pre-ordering the phase 2 model, because the price is the same and includes the phase 2 firmware. If I order the phase 1, I get the radio sooner, but may also face another charge for the newer phase 2 firmware.

Thanks for the tips. I'm leaning toward the 400-470MHz model

Ah - I understand now -- my opinion? Worth the wait....unless they later give it out for free to everyone....but my crystal ball isn't working.... :D

Does your crystal ball have the latest firmware?
Is it plugged in? Batteries charged?
Do you have all the control channels programmed in? secondary ones as well?
Try moving the crystal ball to another location to help rule out RF interference.

Ah, I didn't think to check that it was plugged in.... lemme give that a shot... I don't think moving it around will help (I might drop it).

You're lucky. I wish I had a crystal ball. All I have is this 8-ball that keeps saying, "Ask again later."
