I keep both UHF/458 and the new 700 (156.7 PL) in my scanner. I get traffic on both.

Many troopers still have the original UHF/458 extenders. No PL tone on the original 458 Mhz extender.

Another term you may hear is "Pac-Rat". Some of you "Motorola-Gurus" may be able to explain the source of that word.

If you happen to be within a few feet of a trooper car - notice the short antenna. Cars with the UHF extender will have a 4 or 5 inch 1/4 wave UHF antenna. If the car has the new 700-Mhz extender, it will have the 1/4 wave 700 anntenna which looks like it is maybe 2 inches tall.

Georgia Department of Public Safety - MCCD / Motor Carrier Compliance Division officers also have these extenders.

Now if we can just get those "body pack" frequencies. I heard one in Tennessee a year or so ago as the officer told the driver he was under arrest for DUI. Imagine staging back and hearing that stuff!

** And if you travel into Alabama - their extenders are 800-Mhz - check that d'base for more info. **

Happy Scanning!!

I'd guess that it originated from the actual model of the equipment itself "PAC-RT".
Even though the model may no longer be in use, the name probably stuck.

The "body packs" are you talking the wireless mics to their video cams? I believe they are in the 170 MHz range with about 1 watt.

Are they doing this state wide or just near ATL? I live near Valdosta and will be trying to monitor down here.

What traffic is on these channels? I don't seem to pick up the VHF Frequencies well with them.

Dispatch: 154.680 will be easier to hear as it is the base. Mobile: 154.680 not as easy to hear unless they are close to you. I'm getting base and mobile now working GA 400 in Forsyth county.

Most troopers have the 700/800 XTS portables now, some have had them for a few years. I know Valdosta, Tifton, Marietta, Forrest Park, CIU, and all the SWAT troopers had them in 2007.

Look for many of the newer body mics to in the 2.4 Ghz range.
