Bought my first Garmin GPS. It's a Garmin Drive 61LM. Everything works great. My question is this. If I leave the vehicle power
cable always plugged into my accessory outlet in my truck will it drain my battery down when I park it overnight? I notice when
I turn my truck off and the Garmin powers off the little red light in the power cable is still on.

OK, here's what happened. When I parked my truck it was in the sun. The sun coming through the window
it looked like the little red light was on in the vehicle power cable when I turned the truck off.
When I just parked my truck in the garage it was darker and I could see that the little red light did turn off.

I feel like a idiot. Never mind (Duh!)

I am a lineman for the county.
No problem.

Vehicles will vary, some will leave the cigarette lighter plugs powered up all the time, some will shut them off with the ignition, some have timers that will keep them running for a certain amount of time after ignition off.

Sounds like yours shuts off with the ignition. You may find that other outlets in your truck behave differently.

In reality, the little adapters don't draw much current, and if your battery is in decent shape, it should not harm anything to leave it plugged in to a full time 'on' outlet over night. Longer term might be an issue, but overnight, not likely.

We have people at work that leave their cell phone chargers plugged in all the time and even over a long weekend, the trucks still start.

mmckenna: Thanks for getting back to me with that information
