I was on the way to work this morning and Dispatch started dispatching all different departments and Charlotte Ladder 33 to the Freightliner plant in Mt. Holly.

The thing went to a 2nd alarm. Fire dispatch assigned Ops 16 as the FG channel.

My questions is what is the frequency for Ops 16?

I know they have a couple of repeater channels and then several simplex channels.

Please advise

Thanks

David

There is an Ops 16 under county fire/medic on the Mecklenburg TRS, actually still on both the analog and the P25 system. I didn't hear the call but it's possible they were using that talkgroup.

If this dispatch was coming from Gaston County, they were using the VHF simplex channel OPS16 which is 154.0700, I'm not sure of the PL tone. Unless Mecklenburg County fire was tasked, they wouldn't be using a MEC-OPS channel.

The only other possibility could be that OPS16 was also on the Gaston Simulcast part of the Charlotte digital system, but that would mean that A) Gaston County fire departments have 800 radios (few, if any do) and B) Charlotte Fire would have those talkgroups programmed in (they don't).

Thanks!

I was just curious, because this isn't the first time that Ops 16 has been used. Belmont Fire uses it all the time when they are working a fire alarm at the Hampton Inn.

Gastonia fire has a lot of other fire ground channels. I know they have a license for 154.175, 154.190 and some others. I thought maybe programming them in to see what I could find.

Like I said they are several that are licensed for the City of Gastonia that has never made the database. You have to do a real good search to find them.

Thanks again,

David

In Gaston County, we assign "ops channels" for fire ground communication. My understanding is that these channels are not on repeaters. They are used strictly for communications with different task groups on the fire ground. For example an interior attack team can communicate with fire ground command as well as with water supply coordinator to ask for more gallons per minute or more pressure.
Ops channels are supposed to be assigned in decending order from Ops 16 down to Ops 11. I believe they are numbered as such because of the numeric position they occupy on the channel select dial on county issued Motorola HT1250 portables.
If a scene becomes more complex than a off repeater channel can handle, for example, communication needs to be made with incoming water supply shuttle tankers, they can request a "command channel". These channels are on repeaters and are Command 1 and Command 2.

Also, I believe Mt. Holly Fire may have a limited number of 800 mHz radios due to their close proximity to and mutual aid with Charlotte FD. GEMS (county EMS) supervisors also have 800 mHz handhelds and they have finally installed 800 mHz mobiles in all county ambulances for VIPER access.

Gaston Co Ops 16 is

154.070 Mhz with no PL

It is a basic fireground channel for close operations.
