What do you want to see Uniden and GRE bring into digital scanners in the future? I do not like the way that they are doing things right now so I will just tell them here right now what I would like. I get my new scanner. I take it out of the box and turn it on. It has an on screen menu. I push search and it stops on a frequency. It show me that it is the control channel for a P25 trunking system and this systems ID. It now asks store system info or continue search? I select store system and it stores all the voice channels as it gets them from the control channel. It then asks store talkgroups? I select yes. It then asks store radio IDs? I select yes. It would load the talkgroups and radio IDs into the memory as they come up on the control channel. It would continue to do this until I select search new system or scan this trunking system. Is this too much to ask for ? The next generation of scanners should be able to do this.

What are you going to do with thousands of stored RadioIDs? Storing them would be of no value except if you were to assign text tags to them. This radio sounds like it will have endless amounts of memory. Same with storing talkgroups. On a big system with many hundreds of talkgroups, you'd have a monumental task ahead of you deleting and tagging them, besides, newer trunkers already do this with new found talkgroups if enabled.

NXDN and MOTOTRBO digital.

NXDN trunking especially.

For me, here will be no point purchasing any more scanners unless these newer systems are supported.

How about MPT-1327 trunk tracking ?
these systems are increasing in use.
Isn't MPT-1327 supposed to be an "open" format ?
It's time for GRE or Uniden (or both) to make a scanner to
track these systms.

I'd like a mobile/base scanner with a HUGE display, similar to the Yaesu FTM350 or Kenwood TM-D710. My aging eyes would LOVE that. Bigger displays on portable scanners would also be nice, but there isn't any room to grow there.

While they're at it, I'd like the ability to listen to MotoTRBO/DMR and D-STAR.

An Icom IC-880H will get you listening to D-star. Or, if you just want a comm rcvr, an Icom R-2500 with the D-star module.

What if they made a scanner with scrolling ACARS messages? That be cool. I still think a built in recording module would be neat. Sometimes there might be a hot pursuit or something and you just don't have the scanner plugged into a recorder. So the one touch record function would suffice until you transfer the audio to a computer.

Do they make a hand held with GPS connectivity?

All valid points, but I would like to see D-Star in a scanner. Sometimes a fellow just wants to carry one radio. :)

I agree with wuzafuzz and love the idea love having a record option. It would be simple to install a SD card slot and be able record audio. A SD card slot could be usefull in setting up the radio. The entire DB could be stored and loaded.

While your at it ,,
bluetooth would be nice as well,,

hate getting tangled with wires while i
walk-about,,
maybe even include a BT for programming,
you could eliminate the need for an external
device,,micro size it,add it in,add 50 bucks
to teh price for the first couple years-til the comp
follows..

bt modules are tiny,,like 2.5-3 volts..

sgoss302,

Everything you have described is available now in the Uniden HomePatrol scanner. Check it out at HomePatrol... :)

TV/Camera LCD Monitor

My small Icom IC-R3 has a cute little 1 inch lcd screen built in. It was kind of nice for watching the local TV stations when out fishing, or a good security cam. The problem is all those local TV stations went digital so it will no longer work on them.
I think it would be fantastic if they could design a scanner like that capable of monitoring security cameras and receiving the new digital TV Stations. I would very much like it if it was an external plugin option over a tiny 1 inch built-in screen which does not cut it. The LCD Monitor could be 5-6" or larger depending on how much you want to spend.
Do you think this would be possible and the price would be affordable?

Home Patrol Will Not Go

Home Patrol has some convenient features that are nice for travel such as it's pre-loaded frequencies for every zip in the country. You can type your zip and wha-la! But when it comes down to it, that tiny "radio" is WAY over-priced at $485. The Display Screen is nice but I don't know how you would go about reading it unless you have a magnifying glass. As far as that tiny speaker goes, you better have a very quiet environment like a library or be prepared to use headphones all the time. You can do so much more with a good quality base scanner or handheld. They are very easy to program with it's many banks if you are travelling with the software package. To each his own, but I think the Home Patrol has to and will come way down in price. Then it will basically become a radio for the novice that has a fear or lack of knowledge to program a scanner.
