The system was monitor only. The troopers had some sort of log that they would have stamped at local post offices to prove they were patrolling. In the earliest days, the post would call certain businesses to leave messages for troopers. I think there was even a flag system where the business would raise a small flag to let the trooper know he had a message.

Before Richmond Co. SO had radios, there was a red light on a tower to notify the deputy to call the jail.

Locally, before portables, this city had call boxes downtown. Walking beat officers had to check in every 20 minutes. One officer (who retired as major) had his own chair in one of the alleys downtown. He didn't smoke but he bought Pall Mall cigarettes. He would light one, put it between his fingers, tie the fingers together with a rubber band and go to sleep. The cigarette would burn down to his fingers and wake him up in time to go to the call box to check in.

Very cool. What would REALLY be cool is to tune in that station with your home radio which was of course popular back in the day. Not sure if home radios back then tuned to that band or not though.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics CPI calculator, $15,000 in May of 1940 is the equivalent of an astonishing $340,361.79 in January, 2025. And if that isn't crazy enough, doing this calculation for December of 2024 you get $338,148.21. Which means inflation went up by $2,213.58 in just one month. Do I laugh or cry?

Note: That is based on the CPI (Consumer Price Index) which you can read about at my favorite website here.
