I'm looking to get into digital scanning and am debating whether to get the PSR-500 or wait for the PSR-600. I welcome any and all suggestions, ideas, and views.

Thanks,

It probably depends on whether who need the coverage of a mobile/base radio with an outside antenna. I use the 500 as my mobile, sitting in a cup holder in my pickup using the RS 800 MHz duckie. Reception is excellent.

If you prefer a handheld, I'd suggest the 500.

If you want a base/mobile unit, you'd probably want the 600 instead.

The reason I can't get the both is mainly that I don't have the money for both. The form factor doesn't really matter. My question is what is the difference (if any) internally and coverage wise?

Thanks,

Nothing, the base might be a little more selective but that's probably not noticable.

Depends on how you use it. When it comes to traveling I prefer a handheld as it can be used either way. Currently I have 5 handhelds and my next one Im considering a base, I have 6 base scanners and havent purchased a newer digital base as of yet. Study the recommendations you get from here and the WIKI information. And base your purchase on what you would use the most and your own personal scanning needs and wants....Good Scannin Hoser

Yep, I'm with Tom. I am going to put a 600 in the empty DIN slot in my car. I already have the antenna and external speaker installed in the car. I tested them today with the 500. The big black cube shaped powered speaker by radio shack sounds excellent on 700 MHz digital.

If primary interested in listening to trunked radio systems, there's probably not alot of difference -except- you can take the 500 with you (even out of the car) -- not so much with the 600

I stopped buying base units a long, long time ago... only hand helds for me.

Is anyone aware of something the 600 will do that the 500 does not?

No, they are identical radios, just like the Pro96/2096. Only difference is in some backlight controls.

I was going to ask the same question, but I couldn't wait and ordered the 500 on Monday..I will most likely be selling my BC796 and BC296 and getting the 600 when they come out..
