I'm getting my first scanner in a few days, a Uniden Bearcat 895XLT and I was wondering if there was anything I needed to know how to do when I get it. Of course I'll read the manual, but where would I get started learning how to use it.

I live in North Jersey by the way and I'm looking to listen to some of the local state police commincations, primarily the highway patrol units where I travel occasionally.

OK, you can go to the New Jersey forum on this board, as well as join the Northern NJ Yahoo group

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/nnj-scan/

Between the 2 of them, and the database on this board, you should have all the info you will need insofar as frequencies, talkgroups and so on.

By the way, is there a way to record with my computer and my particular scanner? How would it be done if there is?

I use this program. It is a VOX recorder that works for scanners. You'll need to run a line from the headphone jack to the line in jack in your computer. ScannerReocrder
