The article doesn't say but many of these systems are purchased on federal grants so that might be just for the matching funds, access fees or accessories. It could also be a lease vs. a straight purchase.

Not of they bought the radios with federal funds. They are required to have P25 compatible radios and not NXDN.
Federal grants require P25 'capable' radios. It does not require that P25 be used.
A Kenwood NX-5000 radio would meet the requirements for federal grant funding, but will do NXDN just fine.
No idea what the posse will end up doing, but grant funding isn't a roadblock.

#1 Selling point to Gila Co agencies is the wide coverage. #2 service / sales / Techs is all within Gila County.

The only agency in Gila Co that has any money to buy radios is the Sheriff's Office. The others don't get enough funding to rub two nickles together.

After looking at this a bit, I would suggest that these R & M talkgroups perhaps are:
530 Gila County
531 Gila County Sheriff Dispatch North
532 Gila County Sheriff Dispatch South
533 Gila County
539 Gila County
550 Payson Police
551 Payson Police
570 Gila County agency
580 Gila County agency
590 Globe Police
592 Globe Fire
Probably all encrypted.

wirr, Do you know if they are encrypted? I'd hate to pay the $75.00 for the NXDN upgrade for no reason? Thanks in advance for any help.

Tait Radios would do them very nicely. Tait radios are rugged, easy to use and very dependable.

$ wasn't an issue.

Payson Police = ENC.

VHF/UHF/700-800
FM/P25/NXDN

Programming will include RWC interop along & DPS. Gila SO adds mutual aid for almost every law enforcement agency within AZ.

531 and 550 are encrypted. The others probably are too but I don't have notes on it.

What a clueless statement
My gig uses well over a dozen Tait Radios and they are junk. They got worse after the Harris/Tait agreement,terminated.. My 4 year old radios are starting to fail left and right. Trying to get service done is almost impossible.
