I was getting scared that I would never figure out my new fangled Pro-96 that I purschase. Went to Radioshack, got the cable. Went on Ebay, got a Com to USB converter, downloaded the Win96 software.

All I gotta say is WOW! This is idiot proof. I proved that. I got the frequencies I wanted, it does what I want. I turn it on, I only have to press like 2 buttons total, and voila!

This is awesome.

Thank you to the creator of the Win96 software for making it so easy. Direct link to this website to download the frequencies. As soon as I started hearing the police I registered the software, even if it was optional, I would have gladly paid.

not sure what you mean here... unless Don has changed things... you MUST register after the 30 day trial period... and it DOES cost ($30, but as you are implying... WELL WORTH IT)

Grr... my batteries are dead...
Man, I have been there before.

Go out and get yourself a NiMH rapid charger that handles 4 AA batts. My favorite is the Ray-O-Vac PS4 1 Hour rapid charger. Get yourself at least two sets (8 batts) of 2100ma or better NiMH batteries (I would recommend Energizers), put your yellow battery pack back in the box. Charge up the first set, stick them in the black battery holder start listening while charging the second set. A set of 2100ma NiMH lasts me 12+ hours (depending on activity level and how much I turn the light on).

I have about 6 sets of batts (from 1850ma thru 2300ma) that I keep charged all the time for on the go. I also (now) use an AC adapter in the house becuase I like to lock the light on, but the important part of that is the yellow battery pack is packed up in the box so I can't make the mistake of trying to recharge in the radio and just leaving it hooked up. BTW, the circuit in the radio which allows recharging in the radio really is pretty bad, and I recommend that you do not recharge batts in the radio.

Does it not matter what rapid charger I use? I have an energizer one, but I was scared to use it with anything besides the energizer batteries that came with it.

I know all the batteries have different MAH or whatever, so I wasn't sure if the charger would work.

I should not imagine so. I mean batteries are batteries. As long as the charger is rated to do the job. Just make sure if you are using NiMH batteries that the charger is designed for NiMH batteries. I have an Energizer charger also, but since the Ray-O-Vac can charge 4 nearly dead batts in about 45 minutes and then automatically shuts down when fully charged, I just packed the other one away. :)

Where'd ya get the Ray-o-vac at?
Lets see, I was in Houston at the time so it could have been almost anywhere. Maybe Sam's as that seems to evoke a memory. Sorry I can't narrow it down better than that. But to help you ID it, take a look at the Ray-O-Vac site. Seems like I paid about $29-$30 and it came with a 12 volt adapter for using it in the car and some Ray-O-Vac batteries which didn't last very long and I trashed.

You're quite welcome.

With customer service like that, it makes me want to buy the Win software and I don't even have a RS scanner.

Now that's service with a smile! I wish all companies were like this. No, instead you get a bunch of headaches...

I had that problem with my laptop a Sony Vio, 3 USB no Serial. I just got a USB to Serial adapter a Best Buy (sorry for the plug) by Iogear. It works great with WIN93, 95, 96, and 99. I am having some problems with 92 but that will get by when I have the time. Teh adapter was like $31.00.

As long as they are the same type (NiMH, for example) it should work.

I like the MAHA chargers myself. My stock of AAs is now almost completely Energizers 2100 mAH to 2500 mAH.

I picked up the 15 minute charger from the Shack, not only to charge batteries for my scanner but also to charge batteries for some RC cars I have. I have 2 sets of 2300mah batteries I got at the hobby store where I work part time and have them in my Pro-95 and Pro-94. The iC3 batteries that came with the charger went for well over 8 hours today and that was with the light locked on. I like the fact that they charge in 15 minutes, I can put them in the charger while I am getting ready to go out and they are fully charged when I go out the door. The 2300's are a little bigger in diameter than other AA's I have had so I have to watch putting the battery cover on and taking it off. It is a little bit of a tight fit.

And as for the Win96 software.....what a lifesaver!!!! Great job Don!!!! same goes with Win95!!!!
