Hi
I have a question and im hoping that some of you antenna guru's can help me out.
I use vhf 154 mhz frequency for my farm and I am installing some mobiles in newer vehicles. I do not want to drill holes and im not crazy about magnets on company trucks that will never get taken off. Glass mount antennas would be great but I still need good quality. I also would like to know if factory window tint will affect them. I am also looking for a good quality base antenna in the $100 or less range. What could you advise for a good antenna?
Thanks!

The best bang for the buck Base antenna would be the Hustler G7-1502 for under $195 at R&L Electronics

Because of passivated glass, glass mount antennas are a crap shoot at best and they put a tremendous amount of RF into the cab and vehicle electronics which risks computer damage and health risk of occupants
as well as voiding factory warranty.

Drilling a hole in the center of the roof and mountiong a 1/4 wave chrome dome whip is your BEST option.
These whips will take ALOT of abuse and can be replaced at a cost of less than $9 per whip.
Maxrad MHB1520 $8.95 at R&L Electronics

Second best would be a 1/2 wave design NMO mount on the bed rail near the rear of the bed.
The Larsen MHW150C is a 1/2 wave design that will allow good performace with or without sheet metal under the antenna $39.95 at R&L Electronics

Base antenna

The ARX-2 / ARX-2B series of antennas are economical and can be adjusted to the VHF commercial frequencies. Many municipalities use these for secondary locations. If sealed after assembly, they hold up well. Even a 3db gain mobile antenna with a ground plane is possible (Antenna Specialist's even offered a 'base conversion' kit at one time.... There are probably other Ham antennas that can be tuned up to the 150's

I agree that the 1/4 wave whip is a very practical mobile antenna, the single hole is not going to affect resale price in the scheme of things.....
