In my days of playing CB radio, probably 1998 if I recall directly, I bought a cellular-style glass mount antenna. Traditionally, these are mostly crap. Occasionally you can have decent luck with one, but the majority of them suck.
This one, as I recall, had the coax coming out of the interior side of the mount, but also had a braided ground wire that was made to attach to a chassis ground of some sort. This antenna, although not amazing by any stretch, did a satisfactory job at local talk. I had a Ranger RCI-2970 at the time and it handed that radio just fine and achieved a good SWR (about 1.3, as I recall).
Since that time, I've not come across one glass mount antenna like it, and by that I mean with the braided ground wire. I've often wondered why that was, and if that braided ground wire had a lot to do with why that particular glass mount antenna performed like it did. It was at least as good as a standard entry-level magnet mount antenna, or slightly better.
Does anyone ever remember seeing one of these that had a braided ground wire?
