DFD Engine 5 operating at the apartment fire on South Dahlia on id 06-023 currently, is this the new engine designation that’s running out of Glendale’s old station?

Glendale Firefighters Battle First Apartment Blaze As Denver Crew

POSTED: 6:27 am MDT June 2, 2005

GLENDALE, Colo. -- On their first day on the job as official Denver firefighters, former Glendale firefighters were quick and effective in battling an apartment blaze on their home turf.

The fire started at about 9:30 p.m. at complex near Dahlia and Mississippi avenues in Glendale, just as people were beginning to settle in for the evening.

By the time firefighters arrived on the scene the people living here had already begun to evacuate. Everyone was able to get out safely but it made for some very scary moments

"At first a man was yelling fire and I didn't believe it. Then we just came out and we saw the police and we thought, 'Oh it's for real.' Smoke was coming up, it's for real. They just started evacuating, and the fire department came," said apartment resident Monique Moore.

"I just immediately got out of the apartment and got my kids out. We ran outside and saw police officers getting people out. The I saw the building evacuating, everyone was out on the lawn," said apartment resident Josh Jex.

Fire officials say the fire started on a unit on the fourth floor.

Firefighters were able to get the fire under control pretty quickly and no one was injured.

Wednesday was the first day that the Denver Fire Department took over the responsibility for fire coverage in Glendale.
