Just noticed today that the Hook is now digital. Must have just switched the last few days. I'm told their repeater is up on the East Point building on RT 36. Time for a road trip GM.

Wow! They finally switched over after having most of the equipment for the past five years! :) I will be in that area tomorrow to check on it myself and see if they also switched over channel 2 to P25 (lifeguards, etc.). I'll see what else I can search out this upcoming season...

I see that Sandy Hook is in a transition process still. Most communications have been in the P25 mode however, a few units are still transmitting in analog format. I was not able to visit the area this past weekend, but it will be interesting to see if the Lifeguards will be digital or analog, and if Channel 2 will still be in use, as it was in the past, or if that frequency changed??

System sounds great in Northeast Queens. I get about 2 bars on my BCD996T with no garbled or distortion.

They will have to talk in a way that the wind doesn't blow into the mic. Assateague Island National Seashore (VA & MD) both use the repeater outputs in simplex mode on their beaches. That's what made me wonder if Sandy Hook would do the same, or P25 both the Dispatch and Lifeguard channels...

Just as an FYI: Sandy Hook is experiencing P25 communication problems with Ch. 1 (169.4000 $225 R) and all operations are currently using Ch. 2 (168.3500 $225 S) until the problem can be resolved. I'm wondering if some type of sunspot activity or atmospheric condition is causing interference, as I'm experiencing problems with P25 in simplex mode as well (5 watts output power VHF band).

And yet another positive update from The Hook: It looks like 172.6000 (Simplex) is also in P25 mode with an NAC of 225 (converted from Ch. 2 in the past). This could be Ch. 3, but not 100% positive. It was in use by the Lifeguards during the radio problem experienced on Ch. 1.

Sandy Hook is using their primary repeater again, as of 3 pm 07/06//11.
5 pm Edit: Sounds more like they were just testing it out.

what scanners will pickup p-25 and are best priced in the low to medium range

In the Uniden line, you can get a used BC785D or BC796D (base models), 250D or 296D (portable) They went for around 500 when they came out but you could probably get one on Ebay for considerably less. The 785 and 250, however, will only receive conventional digital frequencies, UHF trunk systems with P25 digital voice and 3600 baud P25 trunk systerms. I believe the 796 and 296 will receive all of that plus 9600 baud P25 systems.

The 996T and 996XT (Base) and 396T and 396XT, the newer models, go new for around 450 - 500 bucks new. Again, you may be able to get a used one on Ebay cheaper. They receieve all P25 digital.

Radio Shack and GRE also make them and maybe someone who has purchased either of those or has some knowledge of them can give you some idea of prices.

if your not real finicky about having all of the uniden bell's and whistle's, wait until radioshack has a deep discount. sometime's they take over $100.00 plus a coupon off the price. uniden's on the other hand never get blown out. be sure it's what you want though. radioshacks <gre's> have been known to overload.
