I'm planning a domestic trip and want to bring the xt with me on the plane. Does TSA allow one to do this? I still have memories of them removing my Uniden 250D from my carry on bag and finding my checked bag and thankfully putting it in that. But that was shortly after 9/11 and hopefully times have changed. I will be traveling between Tampa International, (Tampa FL) and NY JFK round trip, and am wondering do any of you guys have experience at these two airports, or any airports for that matter, traveling with a handheld scanner thru security? Thanks in advance,.....John.

I've never had a problem transporting a scanner in my carry ons. Even flying internationally 1 month after 9/11...

(I see you've posted this (at least) three times in different forums...best to just post it once so you'll know where to see all replies.)

Same here, I flew a couple months ago to Washington DC, no issue with my scanner in my carry on, they were more concerned with my unopened bottled water I bought in the terminal.

I've carried my PSR-500 through airport security many times in my carry on luggage (camera bag and computer bag). Never been stopped or asked about it.

I've been from LGA to JAX numorous times with my XTS3000 in my carry on bag without problems only to be second screen twice. I guess it all depends on TSA if they want to second screen you. But to be on the safe side I second on putting in your checked baggage.

Put it in your checked luggage. Don't subject yourself to secondary screenings.

Several times I've carried a pelican brief case literally stuffed with radios, antennas, cables, batteries and a computer. Nobody cared, other than the computer.

Previous to that and only a couple years after 911 I brought a laptop bag with an 817 hf rig, antennas, etc..... nobody cared.

This was through Kansas City, Atlanta, Cincinnati, L.V., Milwaukee, Tampa and Seattle.

That's interesting, I wonder what their basis was. While the airline can certainly stop you from using the scanner on board, what was the threat about having the scanner in carry-on? I never place ANY of my portable electronics in checked luggage, and have travelled with a duffle bag full of nothing more than portable electronics. I got pulled into the "secondary check area" to examine those portable electronics once, but once they were all verified, I was sent on my way.

I only put accessories in my checked bag if I can help it. Never had a problem carrying any scanner on a plane before or after September 11. In fact, I don't remember getting even a second glance from anyone about that.

I've started placing the PSR500 in the bin along with the wallet, keys, & change. After being pushed into "secondary" once because some dolt saw batteries next to electronics I decided to keep it out to avoid the delay caused when the supervisor has to open your stuff just to look at the radio and say nothing more than thank you have a nice flight.

You should not have issue in a carry-on bag. I have had my 396T in with my laptop accessories on about 10 domestic trips over the past 2 years. One time, TSA pulled a spare DVD drive that was in my laptop bag to x-ray it separately. That time, TSA was more worried about the DVD drive than my 396T.

No problem.

What did they say when they took it out of your bag?
