I have been monitoring the New Hanover County P25 system from 1900 until 2300 and not heard a thing. I went searching for the control channel to no avail. Is it possible the county has switched EVERY user to an encrypted mode? I cant imagine that no one got robbed, hurt etc, etc. This is a fairly large system that also serves Carolina Beach, Wrightsville Beach and Kure Beach police and fire departments. Can there actually be extreme abuse by people who use their scanners for nefarious purposes or could it be someone is giving questionable advise as a reason in order to sell these municipalities encrypted system they don't need so
to line their own pocket.
It really stunk when both the Wilmington PD and NHSO went encrypted. This hobby is one I'm very heavily invested in and its getting worse and worse. I am seriously considering getting back into ham radio, but, unfortunately I now reside in an HOA run community, so antennas are really frowned upon.,I have my application for a local radio club en-route. I do have a Steppir BigIR and i am considering installing it while praying to the HR-1301 gods. My back yard has an area of tall pines and I think it would be very difficult for anyone, including my neighbors, to see it.
Quite frustrating.
Thanks for letting me rant

Thank you for responding. It turned out to be two unrelated issues; a broken antenna on the 436 (I have no clue as to how this happened) and a muted speaker connected to the 536. Unbelievable. And yet the state of North Carolina saw fit to issue a driver's license to me. Go figure...

A not as noticeable and HOA friendlier antenna is the Ventenna. I've never used one but have seen them on other forums and the reviews seem good.

Funny you should bring that up. I have a Diamond base antenna that I'm going to install in my attic. It should be interesting because I just had this house built and the roof sheathing ks foil backed. not sure what effect, if any,it will have on reception/transmitting.
Just might be looking into a ventenna soon!

The foil backing could cause some serious signal blocking issues. I once lived in a mobile home that had metal siding, a metal roof and metal screens in the windows, it was basically a Farriday cage. Once I put fiberglass screens in the windows, cell phone and handheld radio use was more feasible, but not the best in the world.

Once I moved out of there an into a normal house, I didn't know what to do with being able to use my cell phone and handheld radios without having to step outside....

My dad had a metal roof installed on his house, then he lost all cell phone coverage indoors. He had to install a micro-cell..
