Good scanner for Detroit PD&fire

Hi all, I have been scanning Detroit and Oakland county PD and fires. Noe that Detroit has changed to the new system of couse I can't hear anymore. What is a good scanner that works on The Detroit system and this new system that is going into oakland county?, And does anyone know when Oakland county will be switching over?

No scanner will work for Oakland County's new system. As for MPSCS / Detroit, the Uniden BC296/396/796 all work as well as the Radio Shack Pro96/2096.

If youre on a budget my recomendation is to invest in a Radioshack PRO-96 (portable unit) or PRO-2096 (base/mobile unit). If you keep an eye on Radioshack or scannermaster's website you can usually get them on sale as low as $450. Not including antennas and other supporting accessories. But FYI.... appearently there has been some issues lately with reception of the control channel and the voice frequencies. From what Ive kept up on there has been a firmware issue regarding these scanners. This means the microprocessor in the scanner is not interpreting the digital information %100 as compared to the rest of the MPSCS (More appearent in the PRO-96). Though I personally have had no problems with the 2096 throughout the state (I travel frequently) I was down in detroit this weekend and even I had problems with their system.

Oakland County switchover

The FD that I work for in Oakland County is supposed to switch over some time in November. And yes it cannot be tracked by anything on the markt right now. Give it time though and Uniden and Radioshack amoungst others will have something to track it.

No they will not, the manufacturer of Oakland County's system will not allow scanner makers to sell a compatible scanner. They use that as a selling point for "security" features.

This is a market economy. Where there is a demand someone will supply it. It doesnt really have anything to do with M/A Comm. Any readio tech out there could build a scanner to track a system as long as it falls under FCC guidlines. Ive been trying to research it but so far i havent seen anything illegal about tracking it. TDMA falls under a "Mode" of operation, not encryption thus allowing anyone to track it as long as TDMA is operated on the frequencies allowed to track by a scanner.

Let's not start this thread again... Hunt through the ProVoice forum, it has EVERYTHING to do with M/A and there will NEVER be a ProVoice scanner (legally sold in the US) until they give the okay (which they have no reason to do.)
