That's sad, actually. I remember when I moved about 900 miles almost 12 years ago. If I had to relive it, I would not have done so.

I have a friend who lived in Bergen Co. and moved to Tampa about 13 years ago now. At least there are jobs there. But remember, when you relocate, you leave behind all of your family (unless you are going with them) and all of your existing batch of friends, and pretty much everything you've grown up with and come to expect in your life (for me: going "down the shore," rides to High Point, eating good Italian Food... which absolutely s**ks outside of the northeast, unless you make it yourself). Everything, including how people think and express themselves, is different. Prepare yourself for an adventure.

Good luck in whatever you do, but remember that leaving the NJ economy is much, much easier than getting back into it. With how (relatively) little I make here in Elvis Country compared to the NJ economy, if I ever did decide to move back (and we, as a family have weighed that several times), we would be living out of a cardboard box for a year or so.

Good Luck!

I and 41% of the folks you leave behind want out of NJ.

I hope it's for the right reasons and the transition is smooth for you.

Don't forget the online scanners, the metro area is only a click away!

MOST IN PRESS POLL PLAN TO LEAVE NEW JERSEY

"Nearly 80% of repondents to an online poll said they plan to move out of New Jersey. "Are you planning to leave New Jersey?" was the question last week on the Web site of the Asbury Park Press, www.app.com . Of the 6,189 respondents taking part, 35.9% said they planned to leave the state before retirement, 42.6% said they planned to leave when they retire, and 21.6% said they never planned to leave."

If you left 12 years ago it's all different now, and I'll leave it at that.

New Jersey is downsizing like any other corporation leaving fewer people paying higher taxes. That doesn't count the illegals (to the tune of 300, 000 per year) sucking us dry however, that's one of those extra added attractions.

The UK is losing to Australia at the rate of 10,000 a month and the Aussie dollar is now .90 US so does that tell you something like maybe Florida really isn't where it's at? When you get there please tell us if you see any Brits in Tampa.

The cost of living here is truly stifling. When we first moved here from Michigan twelve years ago, we could easily afford to live here. But over the years, our income has remained constant and the costs have just skyrocketed. With the latest property tax statement we received of $6000 (for a 2400 sq/ft 40 year old home worth $200K in a rock solid blue collar neighborhood), we decided we just can't pull it off anymore. Living paycheck to paycheck sucks. So I'm approaching this on two fronts - I'm looking for a better paying job, and I'm looking for one back in Michigan (where the cost of living is still relatively low).

Meanwhile, the folks here in Jersey just keep electing the same corrupt money grabbers as they ever did.

Go figure.

Yeah. I'm planning to move to PA or Maryland in a few years. Taxes much lower, much less congestion, and much nicer place to live. Lived in Jersey all my life though, so I will miss it a little.

Good Luck you also,

It's becoming a sad situation to see alot of people leaving New Jersey because of these high taxes and the fact is I have 8yr's left to complete in my job before I reach 25 yrs and when the time
comes if New Jersey is still in the same situation hopefully I can convince my wife to leave
and relocate I would choose South Carolina as my first choice, but its tough when you have
family and friends here

Actually my wife's cousin will be 5 minutes away and her parents and brother will be with us and the baby. Like said by a few here about the only thing that will be missed is a few great food joints that we frequented.

I know of a number of retiress who have left NJ as there seem to be other states that do not tax pension dollars. Nj taxes your pension fully. If this is true, the only thing keeping me from bailing is the close proximity to my grandson.

Don't move to Maryland our taxes are very high. They are getting ready to raise taxes including sales tax. You are better off going to Delaware, since it have some the lowest taxes in this region.

de784 and Portcop, I'm a transplant from NY. 20 years as a law enforcement officer currently living in Florida. Am I ruining that state?.

Wow, kinda touchy there, eh Barney? In case you didn't notice the LOL and the smiley face, we were joking around.

But now that you mention it, Florida "The 6th Borough" was ruined a long time ago with all the NY retirees, now they are working on North Carolina. Problem is when they relocate, they bring their same NY attitude with them, and expect everyone to change to suit them. Not saying you are one of those, just voicing an opinion.

Perfect example, a coworker of mine bought retirement property in South Carolina and what he loved about it was that it was in a gated community to, in his words, "keep the locals out". Nice attitude, eh?

I can't wait to retire and get out of this area, I'm tired of the people. Why would I want to go somewhere new and be around the same people I'm trying to get away from? When I relocate I will try to assimilate to the area I go to, and not complain about not being able to find a bagel, or say things like "well back in NY we did it this way", sort of like the same way we expect immigrants to assimilate into this country. Enjoy your new found home and embrace it, don't try to turn it into what you had. Look what happened to the Poconos when all the "city folk" relocated there.....

Rant over.
