• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Got a question for old RANGR gurus...

Was there a Y2K bug issue with the EDACS Rangr/S-850 control head combination, or either
item alone?

I'm asking because right about the year 2000, or so I'd IMAGINE that's when it was, as
I didn't take notes, my old Rangr/S-850 mobile scanner went nuts. The talkgroups in
the unit got scrambled. I had several agencies programmed in, and the talkgroups would
end up in the wrong agency. After multiple attempts to reprogram, even using different
installations and different computers, I eventually gave up and put it on the shelf to
collect dust for some years.

But I came across the radio while cleaning out a storage room yesterday, and got to
thinking about it, and suddenly it occurred to me that it MIGHT be a Y2K issue.

Does anyone have any information about such a problem with this kind of radio and
whether or not it might be a Y2K issue?

If it is, then hopefully it can be brought back to proper operation by resetting the PC's
date to, say, 1990, and then reprogramming the radio. Maybe?

I haven an 800Mhz EDACS Rangr with the S850 head that still works fine. KC. MO PD still uses them too. I think it must have been a coincidence.

Well, I tried FOUR different S-850 heads, THREE different installations from the same source disks that the original (working) install came from, and then ADDITIONAL installs made from
a newer version (Edacs 1 vs. PST) , and on at least three different PCs and laptops. I never
once got the radio to work properly again regardless of any of this. And I even tried a second
drawer unit. I even tried making the tiniest codeplug possible, just one group or channel,
putting that in the radio to clear its memory as well as possible, and then add more data
to it, and even that didn't help.

It's insane.

But I'm going to make another stab at it as I've now installed my old Rangr as my scanner
in my radio shop. Nothing like overkill!
