Got a UV-6R for Christmas....

So, I got a UV-6R for Christmas and I'm looking for some ideas about what to do with it. I hope this doesn't come off as rude, but I am really excited about it

I programmed in a few MURS and GMRS frequencies (don't worry- I didn't transmit anything) just to see what's out there. I didn't hear anything though

I am considering getting my HAM, and I'm potentially interested in becoming a SKYWARN spotter too.

What would you recommend for a beginner to try out with a UV-6R? I have a programming cable on the way, and I also got a 24" mag mount antenna

Start attending meetings of a local ham club and get Skywarn training to give you a head start when you get your license and then join the world of ham radio.
