So, I got a UV-6R for Christmas and I'm looking for some ideas about what to do with it. I hope this doesn't come off as rude, but I am really excited about it

I programmed in a few MURS and GMRS frequencies (don't worry- I didn't transmit anything) just to see what's out there. I didn't hear anything though

I am considering getting my HAM, and I'm potentially interested in becoming a SKYWARN spotter too.

What would you recommend for a beginner to try out with a UV-6R? I have a programming cable on the way, and I also got a 24" mag mount antenna

The first step is visit No-Nonsense Study Guides - KB6NU's Ham Radio Blog and download the free copy of the technician study guide. Dan (the author) is well known for his one day tech class and he is very active in ham radio. Start attending meetings of a local ham club and get Skywarn training to give you a head start when you get your license and then join the world of ham radio.
