While doing a search on ebay I found a device for sale that looks like it it would be a great companion for the new Uniden GPS enabled scanners soon to be released by UNIDEN.

They will take some work on your part but the components are cheap and seem ready to do the job. While reading on the BCD996T Yahoo site I found that someone had suggested the possibity of installing a device like this in the radio while using the power resources and space available within the radio.

The module itself is small and requires a 5v regulated PS and an antenna (along with other goodies).

Below is the link:

I did buy one (with the antenna), I have nothing to do with the seller and I'll let you know how it goes when I get the BCD996T.

This looks good. Cheap too.
Put an external antenna on this and this is the perfect unit ofr the 996. If you can find 5 volts spare on the radio somewhere. I bet there is.
Run the serial port lines power, antenna.
This is a good solution.
I still wonder why uniden choose not to do this. Heck we can get the perfect part for less than $25.00 deliverd.
I don't get it.
The only thing the radio has to come up with is some very low current 5 volts.
I have been looking at many of the OEM GPS modules. This is one of the smallest and least expensive.
When I get a 996 I will definatly be doing this mod. That is unless I find a plug and play serial port gps adapter.

I am betting that UNIDEN did give it alot of thought and the engineering group found that putting a radio within a radio created potential birdie/interference problems they didn't feel like dealing with.

We'll see! :)

I was just going to say that. I'll be interested to see how the primary receiver works w/ that GPS installed in the housing vs. w/o the GPS installed in the housing. Please let us know!
