GPS module inquiry

Hi,

I am trying to build a device that will receive location data via a gps module and output it through a wifi module to my laptop. I am a newbie in the RF field, currently studying electrical engineering, and was just wondering where i should start to accomplish what i desire. I have looked at many different components all outlining NMEA 01803 protocol. What I am asking is what it is I should read and research to go forward with this project.

There is a great magazine; Make Magazine
MAKE: technology on your time

that caters to inventors and do it yourself types. I have been seeing a number of articles using the Arduino open source prototyping platform and inexpensive GPS modules. The Arduino even has WIFI and Bluetooth modules pre-built.

I'll bet this question in their forums would get you a number of responses.
