I apologize if this is a "rerun". I live in east TN around 30 miles from Grandfather Mountain. Is there a certain frequency or frequencies they use or are they on NC VIPER? Perused the VIPER listings and didn't see anything. And isn't their antenna on the mile high swinging bridge? Thanks in advance.

Antenna on the swinging bridge? That would be odd. When you say "they", who do you mean? Do you mean Grandfather Mountain itself? Not all of it is a State Park. I think the Morton Family still own and operate the swinging bridge attraction, and I doubt they are on Viper. State parks, forestry and wildlife are on Viper to a limited degree. The statewide Viper system does not have a site on Grandfather Mountain. The State never had anything up there that I remember. There is a Viper site on nearby Beech Mountain, but it will only carry traffic from units in the nearby area, not the entire state.

Yes. THEY refers to the organization. Grandfather Mountain. Note the vertical antenna next to the weather station attachment. I'm thinking they're probably using VHF within the park and not on VIPER.

lol........that pic is what got me started on this! "kudos to K4IHS". Photo courtesy K4IHS.
Grandfather Attraction is VHF NXDN. State parks is a mix of VHF analog and Viper. Mainly VHF. The viper site on Grandmother mtn is the closest to the park which is beside Grandfather mtn. Will try and grab some freqs the next time I am that way.

I don't care about the picture. But... it made me smile this morning. Anybody know what frequency they use?

Likely the antenna next to the weather station is for that weather station. There doesn't look to be a building to house a repeater nearby. I remember that weather station being there, but not the antenna. I seem to recall an antenna on the visitor center building.

I zoomed in on that photo and what looks like an antenna, but upon close inspection it appears to be a lightening arrestor.

Another photo from Google maps of the verticle object next to the weather station. It really looks like a lightening rod for an LPS, but it is quite close to the weather station. I suppose it should attract lightening away from the weather station, but seems rather close.

It's been a couple years since I've been to GRMO but I do remember seeing a VHF folded dipole antenna on the SE side of the gift shop (next to the swinging bridge). I assumed it was for their repeater. I can't find any pictures online of it but I know I saw it. Maybe it's gone now, not sure.

After it is verified as still active, not that I doubt @trumpetman
I may be near there soon with an NXDN capable radio. Maybe I can monitor it.

I also remember an antenna on that building, but I don't remember exactly the type of antenna.

Well I couldn't get near Grandfather Mt yesterday. The fog around Blowing Rock where we were yesterday is the thickest I have ever seen. Locals never seen it that thick either. Very dangerous driving. Much worse than I-40 west of Ashville. It finally lifted in the afternoon but then it was time to leave so I will have to try next trip. The last time I was ever in anything that dangerous was a dust storm between Phoenix and Tucson on I-10.
