I have both units. In side by side comparison, I find that the audio quality is a bit clearer and louder on the PSR 500. Performance of course is the same. However, the 106 is a "sexier" looking radio by far.

On Black Friday im going to purchase a base 197 or 600. I am having a tug at war with myself on whether to pay 70.00 or so more dollars just for better sound quality with the GRE model.

They are the same radio, guts wise. In addition, the comparisons talked about above are for the handhelds, not the base station models. I'd buy the 197. And, even so, the audio is voice only so it wouldn't be that different. Isn't hifi.

Yes,
The handhelds have a slightly different speaker arrangement so they sound a little different.
The mobiles should be the same. I'd jump on the PRO-197 for $299 for sure...

Since the audio quality isn't due to the electronics, but the speaker location, mounting, and case layout, save your money and use some for a good external speaker. Will give you both the lower cost (assuming that your external speaker is less than the $70) and better sounding audio.

Don't forget that you get different accessories with each of those scanners. I believe one comes with a printed manual and the other comes with a ($35) programming cable. The last time there was a sale for the '106 and PSR-500 I figured out what I would be getting and the price came out even if I bought the accessories that were not part of the purchase.
