Hi All

Im not really interested in talking on a CB, but can you take a 500 and listen to CB traffic while driving?

Im not to keen on installing a whip, etc.

Let me know...

Thanks.

If all you want to listen to is CB it would be quite abit cheaper to get a decent cb and go from there. Either way your best reception will be with an exterior antenna........Hoser

Yes you can monitor CB with the PSR-500. It may not be the best choice if that's all you want to monitor though. A true CB radio would be better in that case.

If you're intent on going with a scanner, you might consider a PSR-300 instead, and save yourself $300!

Or buy two, and still save yourself $100! :)

Any duckie antenna made for a handheld is going to severely limit you reception range of CB because of the long wavelength. For any decent reception of CB you will need an external antenna on you car, either a mag mount or maybe the radio shack glass mount (it just glues on the glass, no hole is drilled.)

If all you want to listen to is CB, you would be better off buying a CB radio and external CB antenna for your car. The total cost should be less than $100, compared to $500 for a PSR-500 alone.

It's not the best setup... However, this is what I use to switch listening on and off, (quick key on BCD396) and especially if caught in a traffic jam, lets me know what the problem is and what lane is best to get into. And if an accident you can listen to fire/police or use close call/spectrum sweeper or whatever GRE calls it.
I have thought about a portable CB as reception is not the best on a scanner because of the antenna. But the language is outrageous especially if you have the family along.

Sunspot Cycle 24 should be starting soon! CB will be filled with squawks, etc.. 11 m. will be next to useless for monitoring local info..

The 500 works better on CB than most scanners I've had, but CB radios only run about 4 watts ERP, and I doubt you're going to get the best reception with a handheld scanner with the antenna inside your vehicle.

However, if that's what you want, the radio will do its part.

I feel a little bad for laughing so hard... don't take this personally... I don't think OPs get to close threads! :)

I participate quite regularly on several other message boards... I can't even imagine anyone on any of them trying to say "OK this one's done now... stop posting..." :)

And that is good. A particular thread is bigger than the OP. It may lie dormant for months, then someone else can come and post more information which may trigger more questions, and still yet more answers.

IMHO, there's nothing wrong with posting more information at any time as long as it stays on topic and is helpful to the community. This forum is here for all, not for one.

Thanks! :)
