Have enjoyed a uniden 246T for years, But traffic seemed to be getting less and less. I checked with local EMT and was told Sheriff and EMT have went digital. So I started searching the web for digital scanners, I am no expert and did not want to have to take night classes to learn how to program it. So that narrowed the field to 2 "Scanners for Dummies" A uniden home patrol and the GRE800. Both are supposed to have the channels preprogramed in the scanner. Simply enter your zip code or drill down by state then county and it automaticly loads the channels for your area. Or at least thats thier tale. Only problem.....I GOT NOTHING. Since the 246 is still picking up some traffic, I don't think its a reception issue. Can one of you scanner gurus help out a newbie

Are you saying you purchased both the 800 and Home-Patrol? Either way, did you download the latest databasese from RadioReference and Sentinel, respectively? What antennas are you using...the same as the 246 and are they in similar locations. Lastly, where do you live so that we can help you try to narrow down which frequencies/agencies you should be focusing on.

No I just purchased the GRE800. I did update the database and programming software. My location is zip 39845 (very rural) Seminole County Georgia. Both the new scanner and the 246T have the "rubber duckie" antennas.
The 246 still works but when sheriff dept freq comes up it just makes gurgling sound when they talk. (was told thats because they went digital)
Last night I manually loaded several freq through the software app to the GRE800 scanner and I did see it stop once on the sheriff repeater freq and it made the same gurgle sound as the uniden. I can push the weather button on the GRE and it picks that up justfine but it dosen't seem to pick up any scanner traffic.

Anyway you can record and then attach a short audio clip of around 10sec's of the audio/noise you are receiving?

Heck it hasn't made 10 seconds of noise since I had it. The weather station is only thing that works great. I swapped antennas with the uniden and the 246t worked fine with the GRE antenna. The GRE still did not pickup anything with the 246T antenna. When the 246 stops on the (digital) sheriff freq it makes a sound simular to a slow fart. LOL hows that for a description. When the GRE stopped on the same channel (once) it made the same sound except it only lasted maybe 1/2 second.

Why don't you hop on down to the Georgia state forum further down the forums page, and ask your question there:) I'm sure you'll get a better answer there:D

I had a similar problem with my PSR800. It was deaf as a post. I have an antenna on my roof, and it couldn't pick up anything while my Uniden just chugged away. I contacted GRE, and they advised me to return it from where I purchased it. They thought it might be defective.
