I would like to make a suggestion to GRE that they add a mute function when receiving P-25 encryption. Does anybody know who I would e-mail that suggestion to? I poked around their web-site and it didn't seem to have an area for that.

its not there

but that would be nice, judging by the way GRE has been striving to please their customers, if its something that can be done with a firmware update im sure we'll get it sometime,

While e-mailing tch support on another issue I brought this up and no word or current plans on doing this. Of course this was about 4 months ago. GRE people watch this board so just posting it here will we hope, help to get this added.

I agree it is needed, but GRE also has to be careful not to infringe any patent Uniden my have on that kind of technology.

Now if Uniden could just fix it so the 396 skips over ENC transmissions entirely (and I haven't downloaded the latest firmware yet).

Ooops, sorry that last belongs in the Uniden forum. :D

It definitely needs to be a feature that the user can toggle on and off!

I agree also, when the PSR500 stops on P-25 encryption CC every few minutes! Something must be done!

It's so bad on one system,I don't even bother with it! Hope GRE makes a fix and soon! :(

Other than that,it's a good scanner! :)

I too would love to see GRE offer the ability to skip encrypted traffic.

can't ya just lock it out??

Many federal users in the 163-174 MHz range use a mixture of encrypted and clear voice. Locking it out would not work in this situation.

This is one feature that Uniden has but GRE has not yet implimented.
Anybody know if its a patent item or something

I think that the best situation would be to allow a 1/2 second blip of the encryption or just enough so that you get a hit in the hit count and then resume scanning. Just my $.02.

GRE scanners listening to Motorola Type II systems are not plagued with listening to P-25 encryption. Encryption traffic carries the encryption status bit which triggers a lockout on that particular transmission.

That's not what this thread is addressing though...

Unfortunately the P25 9600bps control channel doesn't transmit those status buts like the Morotola systems do. The Encryption flag is only transmitted on the control channel in the initial voice grant, and not on the update messages that follow. It would be nice if the radio could detect the encryption flag on the CAI data on the voice channel and act on that, but I don't know if the radio can do this with the current configuration.

To be honest, and maybe I am the only one here that thinks this way, I would prefer that they not do what uniden has done. Reason? There are a lot of Encrypted Talkgroups that half of the conversation is not. Therefore I want to hear it. Another example is here in Michigan the State Police have the ESU-Emergency Services Unit, its basicly the State Police Swat Team. Now most of their traffic is encrypted, but some of them forget to flip the swich. Its nice to know they are active even if their talkgroup is encrypted because then that tells me that there is an incident somewhere and I need to listen further and listen more to other departments as well for further development.

So there are two sides to that, and whatever GRE does I will accept, but I think there is a plus side to knowing what talkgroups are encrypted. Besides, if you dont want to hear it, just simply lock it out.....seems pretty simple to me..

SEMTTP - The Uniden's DONT just lock out the whole talkgroup, they "pass by / continue scanning" when they hear the encrypted conversations so you can still hear the other open side of the conversation when its happening.

If the user didnt flip the ENC switch you can still hear him (even if other sides are ENC).

If all the Unidens did was lock-out any TG that have some radios as ENC then it wouldnt be anything to even discuss - and people wouldnt be requesting it from GRE. (as anybody GRE or Uniden could just hit lockout). Its different.

Although fair enough maybe a menu item to toggle it on and off would be an idea so you know when lots of ENC talkgroups are happening there might be a major incident (good idea).

Its certainly something GRE should look into (if its not patented)
