I plan on relocating to the Massachusetts Area soon. Massachusetts uses P25 Phase 1, and Motorola Type II Smart zone. All frequencies are i 800 Mhz using CONTROL and ALTERNATE 800 Mhz freqs. Can the PSR-500 program and use use just the control and alternate frequencies only without the other frequencies? Roughly, there are about 30 control, and as many alternate channels. Thanks for any help folks!

The PSR-500 will work fine if you only program the control channels. There is no need for programming the voice channels.

To DDan: Thanks for the speedy reply. I thought so, but could not find much in PSR-500 manuals and Even the Easier to Read PSR-500 booklet. I also suspect the control channel only will not work on the 400 Mhz freqs. Thanks again!

You don't need the voice channels on any band, just the control channel (and alternate CCs). The scanner will find the correct voice channel using the info from the CC.

If you are programming a large system, you might need to know that there is an upper CC limit of 32 frequencies.

You don't need to put all CC's and AC's into the scanner unless you are going to travel over the whole state. Generally, one just puts in the tower sites nearby. Not all of the TGID's for the state will be affiliated (active) on all sites.
And, yes, the 500 uses CC only mode.

I was in Mass last week with my PSR-500 and I programmed it in the passenger seat of car while we were rolling down I95. Just added a few control channels after choosing the Moto system and added a wildcard. I wanted to see if it would work and it did.

Hey, great! Thanks for that input. I think I may pick up the WHISTLER-1065 to help my in Massachusetts when I settle in there!
