A HELLUVA LOT of people, which is obvious when reading even a smattering of posts on these forums.

Yeah? Who? The least common denominators who post stupid questions like 'What is a TG?" or " Why do trunks have multiple frequencies? " in spite of the wiki article on this site, that does a nice job of explaining trunking? BooHoo. Reading is fundamental.

I wasn't born with the knowledge to program a scanner.

Not satisfied...

I love the idea of having SD card memory...

But until there's a Phase 2 TDMA scanner out there (or at least better LSM abilities), all this stuff will be useless to me in a year.

And so is marketing a scanner to them, which increases the odds that we'll have more scanners for us. A knowledge of business practices is fundamental if you're going to comment on them.

So to market a scanner to them, they shouldn't be expected to learn anything on their own? Really? That is pathetic, No challenge. No payoff. They won't be around long.

We'll have more scanners for us? Dumbed down to the point that they are completely uninteresting and unrewarding due to a lack of features? No thanks. I'll find another hobby.

I understand a little bit about business and expanding your market by turning your back on your existing customers is not a winning strategy.

You been drinking the HP koolaid?

If all they want to do is hear the local FD and PD, this is the perfect scanner for them. I don't get why you say that in a year they'll stop listening because there's no challenge or payoff.

Whine about the HP in another thread though please.

I am not whining about the HP in particular here. I dislike the new GRE for the same reasons, and apparently many do. which is what this thread is about. Shouldn't your HP propaganda be in the Uniden forum?

If you don't like the GRE, then stop posting here. Only makes sense?

Unless you're doing it to draw attention to yourself and start an argument. That doesn't make sense to me, but I understand that's the new thing these days.

I think the gre Psr-800 will be a great addition,,looks like alot of nice features, in a sturdy compact unit,,,also it is really nice to see, they added the same style white backlite lcd display, that is on the 410 and 310...My compliments to GRE.

I guess I don't understand all the whining here? Didn't DonS spell out some pretty nice new features for the 800? Until a few of us get a chance to see how this compares to the 500, not sure why people are already declaring it a scanner for dummies.

Thank you, Ron...I agree with you also, im thankful also for all the fine products from gre and uniden, along with the people you mention that help make things happen...Things sure have changed in the scanning world since i started out in the early '90's.

How the hell are you NOT a beta tester? I figured you would get pre beta testing access.

This radio is going to be a huge win for the Radio Shack market. Some of the features that Don outlined are pretty cool for the advanced user.

It's too bad that I wasn't a better tester.. :( The vendors tend to keep me in the dark till the last minute.

*My* `big hope' is that they will *finally* let the people who actually know how to write scanner software, Don & Mike, actually make the software for it *and* *maybe* the PSR-700! (The software for the PSR-700 easily wins the award for `Most User Hostile Software" hands down!) *If* they `think' they `need' to include software *at least* give Don and Mike what they need to come up with some decent software and I'll bet that I won't be the only one buying both PSREdit *and* WIN versions without even `blinking'!

Why is every one being so down about this? We all new that a digital version of the PSR 700 was coming. GRE had already said that. I'm just glad I waited instead of going out and getting the 700. For those of us that have to travel, it will nice having the cities already programmed in instead of having to load up the 500 before going to on a trip.

James!

I agree totally with you I travel all the time during the weekend for work.. Now just setting it up in one of the 200 scanlists is amazing.... I try to just think about how to set all the lists up. Not to mention record too.. Oh MY.. Toss a GPS antennna on that bad boy and Just let me.... relax...

I also don't understand all the negativity that follows when Uniden or GRE introduces an innovative new entry-level product. Canon and Nikon keep turning out point-and-shoot, do-it-all cameras, but they haven't turned their backs on the advanced users. I don't expect Uniden or GRE to do that either. They know that they can always count on a higher price point from their expert-user markets. Once the Digital EZ Scan gets into the retail chain, you can bet that GRE is going to turn their attention to the next incarnation of the 500/600.

After reading this thread, I went from not really caring about or needing a PSR-800 to deciding that I'm actually quite interested in it. I want a smaller P-25 radio than my PSR-500 that I can slip into a coat pocket.. That left the 396XT as the only alternative, with it's debatable digital decoding. After hearing how flexible the scan list implementation is on the 800, it sounds really cool. I almost NEVER enter a freq in the field. The only thing I really depend heavily on from the keypad is being able to turn lists on or off WITHOUT looking at the radio. That's really my only reservation about the 800 at this point. I do predict that it will be cheaper than the Unidens.

I almost NEVER enter a freq in the field.
You can still do that on the PSR-800, though it's not quite as quick as the PSR-500's "PGM NEW CONV"... enter the frequency in Limit Search mode, store it as a new conventional channel object, then go edit its alpha tag, scan list(s), and other settings.

The only thing I really depend heavily on from the keypad is being able to turn lists on or off WITHOUT looking at the radio. That's really my only reservation about the 800 at this point.
You can do that, too, with [quite] a few key presses... MENU MENU (twice to ensure you're at the main menu) DOWN DOWN SEL (now you're in the scan list selection menu at scan list 001), DOWN to move through scan lists with a SEL hit to toggle them, MENU to return to the main menu, then SEL to start scanning. While I don't do it without looking, I keep all of my "often-toggled" scan lists near the top of the list to make this easier / less cumbersome. If you have a few "enabled scan list" configs that you commonly use, it would be much easier to use the "Scan Sets" feature.

It's not nearly as easy as the PSR-500, but it can be done.

Folks, a Wiki article for the PSR-800 has been created at:

PSR-800 - The RadioReference Wiki

I would like for someone who is up to speed with this scanner to take a crack at fleshing out that article. Use the other GRE scanner pages as a framework for the information we'd like to present in the Wiki about this new scanner.

Thank you.
