I hope this is the right place to post. I live in Austin, TX and they have GATRRS. My question is, when I am programming the counties that also use that system, do I have to add it for each county or is it ok just to do it in the main area that has it established? Not sure if it would cause a problem if I list for each county, just curious.

Not sure what you mean by ‘main area’ but in general you should set up the different counties as different ‘systems’. Austin and Travis county public safety are carried on simulcast 1. But, for example you will hear Blanco county talk groups on one of the sites out there - Round Mountain, Blanco etc. You will hear Bastrop on the Bastrop simulcast site. It also depends on which radio you’re wanting to set up and how it handles different sites within the larger system. Hope this helps.

Keep in mind, the two layers actually have different coverage areas. Some sub-sites are co-located and some are not. One layer focuses on county wide operations and the other on E620 areas.

Thanks for the info. I have set them up per each county and actually pick up transmissions. Using a TRX 2 and am pretty happy with it.

Rumor has it is that the two simulcast layers are going to be merged into a single layer along with all of the current IR sites in Travis County.

I interpret it as "IR" sites are going away and will be absorbed in a huge simulcast...but I could be wrong. (but of course we know IR doesn't exist in the P25 world ;))

That’s the rumor.

I mean, IRs do technically exist in the P25 world as they can handle P25 CAI, just on a 3600 bps control channel.

CoA still calls them IRs though which is why the name as stuck. Easier than saying wide-area sites.
