Greenville city council voted last night to approve an interlocal agreement with Pitt County to move their traffic from VIPER to the county P25 system once they purchase new radios.

Ayden recently left VIPER for the county’s system. PCSO and Farmville PD remain on VIPER for now.

Oh good lord. Well, that's a terrible idea. I wish more of these radio administrators would use their brain instead of trying to build their own kingdom. Either way, EMS will have to use VIPER, even if it's for ambulance to hospital traffic only. They can never move fully away from it.

Greenville’s transit system and public works have been on Pitt County’s system for several years. I’m assuming they have found Pitt County’s coverage better, though I find it difficult to believe it’s enough of a difference inside the city limits to warrant paying that much.

Greenville/Pitt Co. love doing their own thing and doesn't like anyone having their VIPER TGs in their radios. They are the only one that touches Craven who doesn't like to give permission.

Ironic since in this same week the city council approved a mutual aid agreement with New Bern. Go figure.

Greenville and Pitt County were among the first non state agencies on VIPER if I'm not mistaken. A former sheriff lead the charge on that back in the mid 2000s.

Who knows what the deal is. I know for a fact that the SO and FDs that boarder it don’t have access. As for the City of NB, only supervisors and FD apparatus have access to VIPER. (Also PD investigations has access)

Just an assumption but when VIPER to phase 2 their current radios will have to be replaced, maybe they want to reprogram the current radios to their own, so as not to have to buy new radios. Also radios for phase 2 are required to have the ability to be encrypted. Driving up the cost

Actually when I was a senior manager for the VA in Greenville Healthcare Center, I was also the Emergency Manager and I had absolutely no issue getting our radios programmed with all the Pitt County, Greenville PD or FD TGs. I signed an agreement on behalf of the Durham VAMC Director with the Pitt County EM, Greenville FD Chief and Police Chief at the time. Using the agreement Motorola in Raleigh programmed them. I also had all the TGs for NCHP added, not just mutual aid and the dispatch channels. I used to take one home. Lots of fun. Retired now.

The city council approved the purchase of new radios a few months ago. Also the Pitt County system is all phase 2 TGs already.

Your SDS100 should be fine as long as you are located in range of the broadcasts, and they are not encrypted.
