Does a 1/2 wave mag mount antenna need a ground plane? I have read in some places that this is not required. Please comment as I am thinking of using one outside my house window.

A 1/2 wave antenna does not need a ground plane to work.

However, a 1/2 wave antenna will work better with a proper ground plane under it. Adding the ground plane gives you 2.1dB of gain.

We have used cookie sheets in the past to use mag mount antennas temporarily. In commercial buildings, the metal grid for a drop ceiling works well too. Just thoughts if either of those will help you out.

ALL antennas work better over a groundplane that'sat least a 1\4 wavelength in all directions
