I was driving through GA a week or so ago, and noticed that a couple of GSP Dodge Chargers had a long antenna mounted on the rear deck. Does anyone know if this antenna is for CB and what kind of antenna it is?

Likely, it's VHF-high (154.680/154.800). But, where in Georgia did you see them?

GSP has long since abandoned the 42 MHz frequencies.

If the antenna was 52" or 104" length, it's likely CB for interstate traffic, etc.
If were 18-40+" tall, it's likely VHF-high band (148-174 MHz).

I think it was around Dalton, not too far from the TN state line. Both were on I-24 and they looked like white, fiberglass whips, such as used for CB.

Most likely it was CB, but if it was a steel whip, it could be a lo-band to talk to THP on.

Them chargers are sneaky little b@stards, aren't they?

No low band used. When GSP needs to talk with THP they use 155.3700, 154.680 or 155.475. THP keeps hi band in cars and system of hi band repeaters around state.

Due to budget cuts GSP is now only buying Crown Vics and they have abandoned the expensive blue on silver paint scheme for all new cars. All new GSP vehicles will be a solid color with orange lettering. I drove through a DUI check operated by GSP in Atlanta on Jan 1, they had 3 new all black crown vics out there.

Any large fiberglass whips on the rear deck?

Departments are currently taking delivery and can make orders through 2011 for brand new CV PIs. If Procopper news about the paint is correct the always sneaky Georgia State Patrol is now going to be using the budget crunch as an excuse to go totally stealth with their beautiful line of revenue generator/ticket machine plain black or silver wrapper cars with minimal markings or top lights. Regardless of which car/color they use I can still get a kick out of it when they get a blank reading on their Prolaser III s with my Escort Laser Shifter tucked away in the front grille. They use radar while moving though and can confirm that the state has been buying them the smaller Ka Radars for the Chargers though, use to be only the Decatur K band units with the Fords.

I have seen in a number of locations around Georgia police cars are becoming solid black. I've seen in several north Georgia communities, Savannah and around metro ATL. So is black the new trend in GA? Used to be white was for cities, brown was for sheriff's departments.

It's very common as you drive around the metro area...common theme is stealth, especially the low profile LED lightbars or completely concealed LEDs. City of Atlanta switched to a more costly custom dark dark blue paint from almost full white...Cobb has regular beat radio cars full black now (why why?)...Dekalb switched from silver to black a few years back.

Before the cars started changing colors, the reason they drove the CV's instead of Impala's was they had a deal worked out with Ford to provide them the cars with the silver/gray paint scheme at no extra cost. Now that they are getting the Chargers, they are most likely being ordered in either silver or black only as a way to keep down cost. Quite a few of the Cobb police cars are starting to go black as well.

fiberglass whips

GSP now has several Troopers throughout Ga. assigned to DMV and are doing nothing but checking truck regs. I have a friend that is assigned to that detail. You will find that those have CB radios in them since their scope of interest is trucks they have CBs. Thinking the units you saw may be from that unit, there is no different marking on the cars that I have seen but they will have a CB antenna on them. Most of the regular troopers dont care about a CB in unit anymore, got too much else to fool with.

I saw yesterday a GSP Canine unit it was a black Tahoe with orange lettering looked good

All the black tahoes are all part of the Criminal Interdiction Unit, basically the uniform wing of Atlanta HIDTA which is a major federal drug task force. When DEA needs a car stopped they call GSP's CIU to do it.
