The GSP Mitchell Repeater 154.9425 has been awfully quite the past week. I've heard DPS and DNR traffic on the DNR Repeater in Colquitt Co "Moultrie" but none on the GSP Mitchell Repeater which DPS mostly uses for the Moultrie area. Has anyone else noticed this or have any information? Thanks.

The GSP are doing "stationary patrolling." All channels are quiet compare to regular times because of the virus ..I'm in Southwest Ga so I can still hear most of the South section of the state.

Is it at all possible to listen to GSP repeaters with a Kenwood or Yaesu HT or does this require $1000s more in higher end equipment?

I don't know. My wife dad got a kenwood ordered so we will know soon.
I think they use "trunking", which requires the radio to change frequencies continually. If the radio is not cablable, you can only tune in for a few seconds before it changes frequencies. At least that's how it was once explained to me.

GSP is also short-handed. Thirty new graduates were recently fired for alleged cheating on some tests. They were terminated en masse before they even hit the streets.. Here in Columbus, they have recruiting billboards all over town. I've lived here for almost 50 years and I've never before seen even one until now. Because of the shortage, they might have allocated the troopers to the busier areas.

GSP is P-25 digital. An analog Kenwood or Yaesu will not be able to decode that mode.

A Whistler 1040 HH scanner will be an inexpensive way to monitor the state patrol.

GA DNR is also P-25 digital. Same scanner can monitor both.

You may hear an occasional transmission on the older state bands, 154.905 and 154.935, but few and far between.

So, no expensive radios are needed.

What the heck is 'stationary patrolling'??
All GSP up by me, the Cumming Post and the Gainesville post are out and about on the roads doing stops and responding to MVA's. Same with GA DNR.

GSP just started working Muscogee Co. a few years back. they changed a few counties so they could work there. also I understand Muscogee Co. doesn't really want them working there. South Ga. has less troopers because of population of our area. Manchester Post works Muscogee Co.

I'm in South Ga and they are parking in towns for crowd control during this virus.

The GSP are parked in areas watching crowd control in certain areas.

KK4JUG, what has the firing of 30 new patrol officers have to do with monitoring the GSP?
If you don't have officers, there's no one to talk on the radio. With diminished manpower, there's diminished activity.

30 Troopers cheating and being fired The U.S. state of Georgia is divided into 159 counties so that is 1 Trooper for every 5 counties. That does not make sense Tn hires Troopers for the entire State not just a district.

I had a feeling it had something to do with the "virus". Since, making this post I've heard GSP and DNR on the Mitchell Repeater, it's just not as much traffic as before.

DPS which is GPS's parent agency, DNR, and GBI use P25 VHF conventional repeaters that are linked back to the regional dispatch centers. In some areas these agencies use the local P25 trunking systems like in Atlanta and in Savannah. However, P25 VHF conventional and analog VHF conventional are the state's most commonly used systems.
