Please excuse the newbie ignorance, but I'm just getting back into scanning with a new BC246T and there is a lot of new technology that I have to catch up on.

I would like to monitor GSP around the Clayton/Henry county area and also while I travel [typically south of I-20 and outside of 285].

I do have a new Police Call w/CD and I intend to order the new Scannerstuff when it comes out.

Would someone be so kind as to what frequencies and repeaters I may need to monitor to hear GSP especially from my Henry County location?

I don't mind doing some leg work and I have went through the previous posts.

Thanks

Outside the Metro Atlanta area (rural areas that is), your best bet is to monitor 154.6800 (base) and 154.8000 (mobile).

I appreciate the replies and I have been picking up weak transmissions on these two channels from the house.

Time to get a outdoor antenna.

Would someone please point me to the trunked channels for Metro ATL? I just realized RS sold me a 2004 PC.

Thanks again.

To monitor GSP you will need a good antenna at the house or a long whip on a car.

Use the TRS channels for Atlanta and then the codes for GSP. You may also want to try 155.9100 (R) as well. The 154.8000 is the mobile reply to the base, so you would definitely need a high antenna to receive them.

Would it trouble you to either point me to what TRS channels for ATL mean/are?

Like I said I'm still a little green but I'll work for it!

What would any of you choose for monitoring both 150's and 800's from the car preferably magnetic? And the house? I really don't want anything bigger than what RS considers a [outside] base/home scanner ant due to aesthetics though.

Thanks again!

I'm going to make a donation because I respect the usefulness of a site like this and its members.

You shouldn't have to work so hard for it. See the City of Atlanta trunked radio system at http://www.radioreference.com/modules.php?name=TRSDB&sid=398. Once there, set up a new system in your BC246T for this Atlanta TRS. You'll need to set it as a MOT 800 STANDARD, and add the control channels. The control channels are the four frequencies in RED on the above page. Those are the only four frequencies you'll need to add so long as you then go in to "Edit Sys Option" and then to "Set C-Ch Only" and set that to "On".

Now, the Atlanta TRS is set up. All you've got to do now is create a new "Group" to put the talkgroups you'd like to listen to (GSP) in. You'll find GSP's talkgroups near the very bottom of the webpage I mentioned above. Add those talkgroups to your new "Atlanta" system in your BC246T and scan that System & Group.

Remember, though, that these talkgroups are on the City of Atlanta TRS. You will not hear GSP on this system any further away from Atlanta than you can hear any other user of the Atlanta TRS (APD, AFD, etc.). Troop C (Metro Atlanta GSP) uses 155.910 in spots where the Atlanta TRS isn't working. And beyond metro Atlanta, 154.680/154.800 is used by GSP.

Let us know if you have trouble. You picked a great scanner! The 246T is a dream once you get the hang of it.

Thanks. I set up a new 800 MOT group but it wants a TGID and not frequency when I attempt to enter a channel.

Any idea?

BTW- I bought the RS outdoor base ant and temporarily hung it up in the closet and it works 500% better than the rubber ducky. At this point I think I'm just going to put it in the attic.

Also, is there a 90 degree bnc to coax adapter available? The coax I bought is 13AWG so it isn't going to bend well which makes placing/standing the scanner difficult/impossible.

Thanks

Correct. In a trunked system, a "channel" on your BC246T is the same as a talkgroup number. A "control channel" is the frequency (4 of them) that you need to program in when you set the system up. Sorry for the confusion in similar names. Go in to the new system you created, go to "Set Frequencies" and add the four in RED. Then, go in to "Edit Sys Option" and find "Set-C-Ch Only". Set that to "On" if it isn't already. Now the trunked system is set up. Now you can add which talkgroups (i.e. "channels" in BC246T speak) you'd like to listen to, like GSP.

Thanks! Its up and running but according to the id's I'm picking up APD zone 3 dispatch and such.

If I only want the GSP only does that mean I only want their talk group id's that are listed at the bottom of the previous link?

on edit I made a GSP group with those 4 id's. Am I on the right track?

Yep. You can listen to anything on there that you want. If you just want to listen to GSP, just put them in their own group and scan only that group.

Inside troop C area, but outside range of the Atlanta TRS you can still hear GSP and DMVS on the VHF repeater. Areas such as Gwinnett, Cobb and parts of Dekalb will still be on the old VHF becuase these areas are well out of range of the Atlanta TRS.
Another note of interest is the fact that GSP almost NEVER operates in Gwinnett county.
