Southern LINC is the iDEN two way radio system The Southern Company built for it's own internal comms, then grew it into a gubment/business system, then into a full blown consumer product. Yes the LINC(PTT) portion is in the 800 band. I forget what the celluar portion uses.

Frequently Asked Questions about SouthernLINC Wireless | SouthernLINC Wireless
Who are SouthernLINC Wireless' customers?

We currently have more than 260,000 customers who operate in virtually every industry, including service and sales forces, construction/contracting, emergency services/public safety, governmental services, forestry, public utilities and transportation.

SouthernLINC Wireless customers are businesses with mobile work forces that need to conduct a significant amount of internal communication or require ongoing communication with the same business partners or suppliers.

At the very least most all my county's SO LT's Task Force, CID types use them. I'm not sure if it's all the way down to the rookie patrol deputy level or not, but maybe SGT's and other ranking deputies. Seems to be the case in a lot of other areas too.

Worked for a contractor for several years here that used them too, and toted one myself a good part of that time. I have also worked around several folks that had service with them for just their personal use. Mostly from one certain area of Alabama where it was pretty much the only reliable wireless option available to them. Maybe also for the direct connect option. (think deer hunting)

The network was back at 100% within 72 hours after Katrina made landfall. Pretty much the ultimate be all, end all, disaster test.

iDen uses 800 for voice, data and PTT unless its a cdma/iden phone but thats more on the nextel system. iDen makes phone calls just like a phone interconnect on smartnet type II systems

The other day I decide to scan Gulf Power Comp. and heard a few people talking but sounds like they are at the plant itself. I didn't hear any call(s) go out but like some members say be on the 800 southern system. I have like 6 TG's
