From CSP:

The Colorado State Patrol is investigating a two-vehicle crash resulting in two fatalities that occurred this morning on Highway 50, east of Gunnison. At 8 a.m., a 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt was traveling westbound, near milepost 169, when the driver lost control on the snowpacked highway. The Cobalt spun into the eastbound lane and was struck on its passenger side by an eastbound 1994 Chevrolet Beretta.

The Cobalt's driver--22-year-old Jamie Dowling of Irving, Texas--was not wearing her seatbelt at the time of the crash and sustained serious injuries. She was transported to a local hospital for treatment. The vehicle's two passengers, a 5-year-old boy and a 2-year-old girl, were restrained at the time of the crash but sustained fatal injuries. The boy died at the scene, while the girl was pronounced dead at the local hospital.

The Beretta's driver, 23-year-old Everardo Ento-Salida of Gunnison, was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash and sustained minor injuries.

Excessive speed and alcohol and/or drug use are not suspected as contributing factors in the crash at this time. The snowpacked roadway had been plowed prior to the crash, and snow reportedly was falling at the time of the crash.

No charges have been filed against either driver, and any potential charges will be determined at the conclusion of the investigation.
