Gwinnett/Suwanee area

I live in the Suwanee/Duluth area of Gwinnett, and I am new to scanning.

I work from home and was looking to purchase a scanner to pick up the local police/fire/rail/airport conversations going on. Nothing to specific, just wanted to listen to the goings on in the area for enjoyment.

In checking the database and briefly reviewing this forum, it seems that the local departments are all encrypted. In short do I live in an area that is pretty bare of any scanner listening opportunities?

Unfortunately, yes.
They went dark in 2008.

Depending on where you live, you might be able to receive the USACoE(Hall county TRS), DNR and GSP conventioal P-25 frequencies.
Railroad sometimes is interesting.

There is DeKalb county TRS you can monitor.
