I think CNN and other news agencies have brought in their own satellite equipment, but 'public' phone service and internet is not running. They don't have any power! Even the hams that are there are running batteries or generators (if they can get fuel).
Internet and cellphones are definitely working in places. Twitter has many sad tweets about people trapped. Check out Multilink Haiti (InternetHaiti) on Twitter for example. They are retweeting many people on the ground there.

Yep, very busy last night on 3455. Not sure if this was related to the Haiti effort, but heard controllers working REACH and CANFORCE. I could barely hear the other side of the conversation (was using a VR-500 with a whip, too lazy to relocate to the ham rigs), but it was some good listening.

While monitoring the SATERN net on 14,265khz it was reported that there is a team of hams traveling from the Dominican Republic to Haiti, arriving tomorrow, to set up operations. I believe there was _one_ ham on from Haiti yesterday, but that was it.

Edit: CNN has some amazing video showing just how bad it is over there. *BAD*
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------I got this e-mail today from Radio Amateurs of Canada.

RAC News Bulletin - January 17th, 2010

Haiti, the Amateur perspective.

We have all seen the tragic human toll and devastation of the Haitian hearthquake as reported by the media. We have been asked what the Amateur community is doing about it.

To our knowledge, since the hearthquake, less than half a dozen Hams have been reporting from Haiti and have done so very sporadically. Most have severe constraints for electricity, fuel or other required facilities.

Apart from a couple of Hams embedded with the UN or the Red Cross, none other have succeeded to enter the country and stay to operate.

Yesterday, a convoy of Dominicans made up of representatives from that government and including 8 Amateurs, entered Haiti by road on its way to their Embassy in Port-au-Prince. Almost at destination they were attacked by gunfire resulting in one dead and several wounded. All 8 Amateurs are safe. The convoy turned around and is now safely back in the Dominican Republic.

Outside of Haiti, there are scores of Hams listening on the published HF frequencies for emrgency communications and ready for any QSPs.

Here in Canada, our Vice President Field Services, Doug Mercer, VO1DTM, is watching the situation very closely, ready to give any help that might be needed.

We also have French speaking operators like Gerry, VE2AW and Richard, VE2DX, that are ready on the frequencies to speak to anyone in need in Haiti.

We are also getting ready for the future. At the Request of the Salvation Army SATERN I have recruited about 20 Hams, fluent in French, that are now poised to leave for Haiti when required.

This is the situation as of now and we will update you when we have something significant to report.

73,

Daniel A. Lamoureux, VE2KA
Vice President International Affairs, Radio Amatuers of Canada

i dont get it either

Why do they do it? « VA3QV’s Weblog
cnn had a report of a cargo jet that came under fire when it was landing,
>From official unclassified open sources, here's how Haiti Air Ops
(MTPP/MTCH) are being handled.

All inbound fixed wing aircraft have to obtain permssion and slot assignment
+-20 minutes schedule, via pre coordination telephone contact with the Haiti
Flight Operations Center.

Military Ops aircraft inbound will contact "Kingfish Tango" using 140.5 mhz,
20 minutes out.

Haiti VHF frequencies that will be used include: 124.5 (Area Control) ,
118.7 (Tower), 118.3 (Ground Control?/Flight Services?).

Aircraft can expect potentially long hold times in the local pattern prior
to landing.

I heard what I think was Air Force MARS on 3977.7 tonight. They IDed only as Andrews Global. Can anyone elaberate on this?

And there was an ahole sending CW over top of the SATERN net and it was too funny when the NCS said to him "I looked up your call on QRZ and then googled you, I know what kind of sick stuff you are in to and if you don't stop interfering with this net I'm going to tell everbody who'll listen who and what you really are"

Not another dit came from him :)

Real interesting Eric !

I never never saw "Andrews" or any other US MIL HF station
working with amateur radio stations transmitting INSIDE the
amateur radio bands. Even while "emergencies".
Or was it a 2-way HAM contact (Hi Jim...hi) with "just"
a phone patch to Andrews ?

73, Tom

i have not heard them .
They have been working Andrews all morning Tom. Very definitely military ops
on Andrews end. They are not sure how to talk to a HAM station Hi Hi ! ! !

Andrews Global Command has been using both PR and stateside transmitters.
Almost fell off my chair when I heard them establishing early this AM.

Regards,

Eric// KG4OZO// Atlanta.

I heard a ham operator, using a ham callsign, check in to the SATERN net from Andrews.
