Hey guys, new to the scanner community.

I recently bought a PSR300 GRE Triple Trunking Handheld Scanner and I've got to say that I'm a little overwhelmed by programming it.

I'm trying to get on the Aliant Trunked Mobile Radio System, and listen in on Halifax PD.

I just cant for the life of me figure out how to get on the network. I read through some of the manual and maybe I'm just simple, but I can't get it up and running.

I've stumbled around punching buttons and doing what I think is programming it, but I have yet to hear anything. (Yes, I've checked the volume)

Anyone have any thoughts?

Some progress, I've managed to tune the closest tower to me, Maritime Center (860.13750). At least that's whats on the display.

I have the scanner set to Motorola, but at the bottom it says MOT: none. Yet numbers sometimes flash up on the bottom, I have NO idea what this means.

I'm just now sure where to go from here, I revisited the manual but that wasn't much help.

I know that I have to set 14704 as the Talk group if I wanted to listen to Halifax Fire Dispatch Core, but I can't figure out where to enter that in so that I can listen to it.

I'm usually pretty good with tech stuff, but I'm having so much trouble.

Can anyone at all help?

To Create a new Talkgroup object press PGM then F1 (NEW) then F1 (TGRP).

I have a PSR-500 ( I HOPE you meant to type PSR-500 instead of PSR-300 when you said you want to hear HRP as I don't think the 300 does digital trunking,,,) but the menus might be the same. At any rate, the important items are:

-Scan Lists - choose the scanlist (it's like a bank on a regular scanner) you want the new TGRP to be in, let's say your Fire scanlist is #3 like it is on my scanner, use the directional arrows to move to the 3 and hit SEL or ENT to get a * by the number. Any Scan Lists with a * will have your new TGRP in them when scanned.

- TSYS - Choose NS TMR or whatever you called your TSYS containing the tower you heard.

- ID - Will default to Wildcard, here's where you enter 14704

- Type - Leave it at Group, after all you're programming a TGRP, right? :)

-Tag ID - for 14704, call it what you can remember, HRF Disp C or whatever

Everything else can be left at defaults, I turn off Delay, and I set the LED colour to oh, I dunno, let's say red (#1) for HRF.

Hope that helps. And I hope you have a 500.. Or that I'm wrong about the 300 being analog only, because if you have a 300 and I'm correct you won't be able to hear HRP. Also you should try programming software, I use PSREdit for my 500 and I like it, you should get some sort of programming software if for no other reason than to use its GUI to help you see the bigger picture as far as how things are set up. It's a little easier to see how you've got things configured when you see this as opposed to a 3 line LCD display:

I'll send you the file I use for it if you want, if you have a 500. Heck I might send it anyway in case the 500 is compatible with the 300. If that's what you mean. Please, please have a PSR-500, since I can definitely help you out then. I'm an IT guy too, and I don't know about you but I learn by doing rather than reading how, you're best (once you get over this initial frustration you're having now) to mess around with it and figure things out. I'm still tweaking mine.

Darryl, the interface for the PSR-300 is completely different than the PSR-500, and the programming files are also different - you don't use Win500 or PSREdit to program the PSR-300, you use Win97. So unfortunately, none of your post would apply to Ruse's scanner.

Also Ruse, your scanner doesn't do digital communications, only analogue - and unfortunately Halifax Regional Police are entirely digital. You would need a PSR-500 in order to listen to police.

I thought I should post it in case he made a typo Chris, was really hoping that was the case. Buyer beware I guess, hope he wasn't told he would be able with a PSR-300.

So no word from the guy as to whether he exchanged it for a 500, or what? Dang! I was hoping to see how this all panned out.

With the programming I sent you? Did you program some more towers into it?

Edit: Actually you would have been able to get away with not doing anything since the towers at Blomidon and Morristown appear to have the same CC frequencies as Preston and Mar Centre.. Maybe you already know about that stuff anyway.

I've received files from lots of people and have slowly been compiling things together. Still working on it, but slowly compiling a list. The worst is I cannot obviously test everything outside of Hali :( lol

Also a lot of it is repeated and in different scan lists, etc. It's a mess really. With work, workin on the car and drinkin :D I do not have time to get everything and play with it.
