G.I./Hall County Emergency Management Dept. awarded Homeland Security grant

The Grand Island/Hall County Emergency Management Department was recently awarded $466,352 for the 2006-2008 Department of Homeland Security Grant.
About $316,000 will be used toward the enhancement and upgrade of the emergency dispatch and communications center to ensure compliance with the Central Nebraska Regional Interoperability project in Nebraska. The money will be used to purchase a new radio console, as well as four upgraded identical dispatch workstations.

About $150,352 is being dedicated to the Hazardous Materials Response Team for the purchase and replacement of standardized equipment, emergency response training, and for 10 firefighters to attend the Haz-mat Technician Level Certification Training. The haz-mat team will receive personal protective equipment, chemical, biological, radiological nuclear or explosive search and rescue equipment and global positioning system, detection and decontamination equipment.

The Department of Emergency Management was also awarded a separate Emergency Management Preparedness Grant for $53,127. It will be used to pay a portion of the emergency management director's salary and benefits.
