Driving to work today i stopped by to see a buddy of mine in Aldershot at the building that I lived in for 10 years.

The 396T is my go to scanner, mounted on my rearview mirror and hooked up to a Larsen mag mount, cut for Fleetnet but it should be able to pick up the tower. I never ever had a problem hearing the control channel. I could see the tower from my apartment in Aldershot and pick up the signal w/o an antenna.

The question; does anyone monitor the HR system with a 396T? This radio seems to have issues with it. The control channel drops in and out even with a good PC Tel antenna that is measured for 800 mghz.

It's a multi site system and I think I remember people here mention issues with the system especially with older scanners.

The HP1 I have is ok on it. I've used a few GRE and Uniden scanners on it without issue. Specifically the 396Xt, PSR800, And a few other radios that I have had or have, lol.

Anyone care to share experiences?

It sounds like phase cancellation from picking up 2 sites. If your between both it wont matter what antenna you have. The discriminator cannot isolate one signal from the other. The only solution would be to try and get one site stronger than the other and let capture effect do the rest.

I use a 396T as my CC scanner and for general freq monitoring at sites where I want to monitor on site transmitters. Its a bullet proof unit, small and light ideal for field work.

Halton, like all of the GTA P25 systems, is simulcast and uses phase shift keying modulation, which most scanners have issues with. If you were close to a site, I'd expect the 396T to work ok, but maybe it was overloading the scanner. The CC plus multiple voice channels hitting the front end and causing clipping wouldn't be pretty. Try flipping on the attenuator or using the stock antenna when you're that close.

I'll try out your suggestions guys, thank you.

The Halton system is coming in 100% here at my work parking lot right at Bronte GO
