Interesting how we are old-fashoned, obsolete, and un-needed until....

I know of some counties that have told the Hams that they are no longer needed/wanted in emergency planning.

This snowstorm / power blackout disaster was a serious wake-up call to everyone.
Cell phones don't work when cell towers don't have generators, which most don't.
People who have VOIP were also out of luck when the cable providers went entirely off the air, taking TV, Internet and phone service with it.
In serveral of the five CT ARES regions, hams have been keeping radio links between shelters and EOCs during the extended power outage.
