According to the article NOAA National Weather Service Delcares Walt Disney World Resort Storm Ready, Walt Disney World has an amateur radio club
http://www.noaanews.noaa.gov/stories2006/s2638.htm

I found these repeaters using Google.com:

147.300 W4WDW
442.000 WA4ABQ
443.400 WR4AMG

I did not find information about an actual club. Does anyone have more information about the repeaters or club?

I'm tempted to bring my handheld trancievers with me to Walt Disney to use the repeaters if they do exist.

Bye

I think these freq's have something to do with the Disney EARs program. Any info I would give you would be bad - do a google search for "Disney EARs" and it should provide you with the information you are looking for.

P.S. Disney EARs (Disney Emergency Amateur Radio System)

I also found a 442.000 W4WDW repeater.

Thanks for the helpful information sbkeith. I found out that DEARS has a relationship with the Broadcast Employees Amateur Radio Society. I'll keep searching for more information.

Bye

www.artscipub.com/repeaters is a good resource, usually accurate. I know they list a repeater in Lake Buena Vista though it may be one of those you've listed.

I was in Dizzy world in April but did not have my VHF/UHF rigs with me. I was on HF from the hotel when not out getting dizzy in the parks!

I've been told that there are ham repeaters on the Disney property, specifically Magic Kingdom. However, I have not personally verified this information. It would be awesome if this were true since it would work much better that FRS.

I tried a number of 2m and 70cm repeaters that were listed in the area that I found on the net, QRZ, ARRL, and even the website for the local ham shop out near the Executive Airport.. Heard a few QSO's on 2m but none returned my call despite the tripping of the repeater. Location was not a problem since I was on the 12th floor of the Rosen Plaza Hotel. Who knows why I didn't get any reply. Agreed that almost everything in the area has a pl of 103.5. Possibly for RACES/ARES purposes or just ease for locals to switch around. Little lonely for visiting hams though.

Slightly off-topic ...

For those who will be visiting the Orlando area around the second weekend in February, the Orlando Amateur Radio Club will hold its "HamCation" at the Central Florida Fairgrounds on Feb 8, 9 and 10.

More information is available at www.hamcation.com , and the club can also mail you a copy of their 8.5x11 folded brochure for the event.

I have used both repeaters with my wife and sister and I have never had any QSO's with any other operators. You are right, it beats FRS hand down! It also helps when your family members have ham licenses.

Disney Amateur Radio

It shows both the 147.300 and the 442.000 with a 103.5hz PL. Both are also listed as open repeaters with a WD4WDW call sign.

I just might have to bring my ht with me next year when I go there...

I have enjoyed Amateur Radio in the Orlando area since 1993. The Florida Repeater Council web site is accurate and there is a lot around there to hear. Bring your radios. You'll enjoy it.

What could beat FRS? Why hardly anyone uses it a WDW. (unless they are within 15 feet of each other)

Bringing this thread back to life, I am somewhat puzzled as to which repeater(s) is best for Disney World.

My 6 year old daughter, Rachael Ann, is a brain cancer SURVIVOR. Make-A-Wish is sending our entire family of 6 to Give Kids the World http://gktw.org, which will be our base of operation while in Florida. I very, very much hoped that Disney World or affiliated park had an amateur radio station from which I could work and later send out custom QSL cards in honor of my daughter. I seem to have struck out on this.

If anyone has any inside connections please let me know. This is a once in a lifetime trip for our family and it has been an extremely difficult and emotional year. I hold an extra class ticket and would prefer to work HF, but that isn't required. There isn't enough time to set anything up with the ARRL as to a specific date and time on a particular frequency or repeater. Even a repeater would be great to have a sched. that I can hit with my VX-7. We will arrive in Florida on June 26, 2008 and will depart on July 1, 2008. At $100 for each additional checked baggage I cannot even consider bringing my FT-847, although a thought if I could work out an antenna.

Our daughter has been declared to be free of cancer!!! She endured 6 rounds of Chemo and two surgeries. She is in fragile health still, but each day gets better.

Any info on Disney World ham radio options is appreciated, either by reply here or at my callsign address of bob@af6d.com

Walt Disney World Amateur Radio Info.

Greetings Gang! Unfortunately DEARS DOES NOT have a Station that is open for our guests to visit or operate at Walt Disney World. We would like very much to have a Guest operating station, it would mean that we are an "OFFICIAL" part of the MAGIC, and that we have company support. We do work with Reedy Creek Emergency Services and enjot it. We have NO Official Company support at this time. We do have a little support from a few supervisors who knows what having amateur radio around in a time of emergency really can mean. "(May 30, 2006) - The National Weather Service has recognized Walt Disney World® Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Fla., as a StormReady® Community. As the first theme park and resort in the nation to achieve this recognition, Walt Disney World joins more than 1,050 StormReady communities throughout the United States." (NWS). We at DEARS all have ICS 100 and most have more 100 200 700 and 800.

I have set up 2 new URLS to keep folks updated with ham radio at WDW they are:
http://www.DisneyDears.info and http://www.DisneyHams.info .

Amateur Radio is ALIVE and WELL at Walt Disney World. The Disney Emergency Amateur Radio Service (D.E.A.R.S) has experienced a resurgence in the last couple of years and is current operating as a Cast Member Club on the property.
While in the Walt Disney World Area, HAMS are welcome to use either of our repeaters for communication. These are:

2m 147.300 (+600) PL 103.5
70cm 442.000 (+500) PL 103.5

While we do not have Echolink capability at present, this is something we are presently looking into.
