Hang Time

Why is there all different hang times? My sheriff's dept. is only one second. My fire department is 2, EMS is 2, a township police close to me is 3. Why so many? And what is the best hangtime to have? One that shuts off quick to not be annoying or one that goes for three seconds to let other units talk? Thanks

Are you talking about the hang time on a conventional repeater? Meaning the period of time the repeater transmits after someone unkeys?

Some places might put a lot of thought in to it, but in reality the hang time is either the default for the repeater or it's whatever the radio shop guy decided to program


Most public safety/business radio users don't notice the hang time and probably don't know what it is.

If you are referring to the hang time on a trunking system repeater, that's a slightly different matter, but my answer would probably still apply.

Not sure if anyone but a Moto tech would know this but, what is the deafult HT for a new Motorola repeater? Thank you

I'm no tech but I think it depends on the repeater. For an MSF-5000 I think it's like 3 seconds.
