It kind of depends on just how the system is set up and how the radios are programmed. In general if your talking about a VHF or UHF repeater system, the "TALK AROUND" is going to the channel that puts the radio TX on the repeater output. If your talking about a trunked system, then its a whole different ballgame. There are a number of frequencies that have been set aside for a "national talk around or direct" communications. Its possible that this is where the radios are programmed to go.

You might want to check this site's database and go to the trunking system listed that your interested in and see if any talk around info is listed there.

hartford talkaround

talking to someone who knows , (retired) this person told me that he believes that theres a way to make the radio basically take one of the 16 freqs and put that one freq. as a conventional freq. and it takes it out of trunking mode. theres no set freq. it just depends on one of the open 16 freqs. not in use. if that makes anysense ! but its something the user has to do to the radio on each end....dont know exactly what !

The City of Hartford radio system provides for low power point to point 800mz communication, usually available within short distances.

It is off the trunked system and can be used between Firefighters and the Driver of the Vehicle and then relayed over the trunked system.

The system can also be used in Police Operations to avoid the radio traffic from being heard over distance.

Also the traffic cannot be monitored by dispatchers or other units on the talkgroups.
