I'm currently reading George Vaillant's book "Triumphs of Experience: The Men of the Harvard Grant Study". It's a fascinating book about the longest longitudinal research study in America - nearly 80 years! The study's basic question that it attempts to answer is "What brings happiness to men's lives?" Short answer: it isn't money and wealth, or success in business, or fame, but rather it is the personal relationships we forge in life.

In particular, on page 115: "We found that contentment in the late seventies was not even suggestively associated with parental social class or even the man's own income. What it WAS significantly associated with was the warmth of childhood environment, and it was very significantly associated with a man's closeness to his father."
