• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

I own a Motorola SP50 Two Way. When my little brother was over to my house, he got hold of it and put the battery pack in backwards...now the radio won't turn on. Is the radio shorted out or is the battery? Will I need to buy a new battery, or a whole new radio?

Well lets see if he placed the battery in backwards, it sounds more like he shorted the entire board since the positive and negative met vice versa sending a backwards pulse of power then fried the radio or the battery is bad.....

here are a few options

A) kick his butt

B) take it to the shop and see if its the battery of you would need a new walkie

C) kick his butt before you go to the shop

D) Give it to your little brother and tell em to fix it

E) all of the above.

If your wanting to buy a new one, its the best bet you get something better then an SP50, something with a huge battery that your little brother cannot put in backwards aslong as he doesnt switch antennas around..

Not liking some of the news I'm hearing...but it's better than hearing nothing. It's a good thing I have a big Motorola shop near me (Wells Communication). I really like options A, C, and D lol.

It's probably just a blown protection fuse or something...

If you don't have a lot of money in to it, I'd suggest storing it in the circular file.

Mmmm did you ask the shop to see if they can replace anything on it?! Hey i would say this, look around ebay "if you trust it" and look for any SP50 parts for repair and you can use a board that works and WALA! you have a working SP50, just you need to get it reprogrammed...

If it is that fuse it will fix it, I've done it before blown a fuse and had it replaced and it worked.

Well...I took my radio apart and I have no idea what I'm looking for. I think I'm just gonna take it to the shop the next time I get a chance and let them figure it out. Thanks for all the help!

The fuse is just to the left of the pos battery contact, it is a quarter inch long, center should be white, and should have a little "4A" stamped on it. Check it with an ohm meter. Also, just make sure the battery contacts aren't mis-aligned, or pressed in too far.
