• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Preparing a Havis 24" vehicle specific console for a 2021 Interceptor Utility. The console has mounting holes and grills on each side for installing dissasembled Motorola type speakers internally. My question is would I want to retain the back housing of the speaker inside the console rather than have the speaker cone "free floating"? The Havis instructions give no indication as to how to perform this other than specifying a nut and bolt length.

If you have room, retain the back of the speaker. That'll protect the cone and the connections.
Yes, as well as providing proper sound; back pressure from the rear side of the housing is important for proper operation. If you just let the back side of the speaker cone fill the console's internal space it will sound bad. I can't quote theory, but I know that I have seen it/heard it.

Running a speaker driver/cone in a large box begins to approximate no box at all. Unless the driver is rated as "infinite baffle" or "free air" consequences can include distorted sound and/or premature failure (due to over-excursion) when the volume is cranked to over-come road noise. There is a whole set of parameters (Thiel/Small) that describe a speaker driver's characteristics including suitable enclosures.

In summary, doing surgery on a well engineered (speaker) to put the driver in random hole/box is not a great idea. I'd keep the speaker as is, and modify the console hole if practical. Keep the driver/cone in its enclosure/box, then it doesn't matter much if you put it in the console.

Delete term "infinite baffle," a very large box is free air approximate, not IB

OK, console finally arrived and I took apart a speaker and well...I don't see any point in keeping the rear housing attached...right?

On a related note, how will housingless cone in the side of the console affect the tone of the audio? The APX has bass mid and treble controls, but for the Uniden SDS on speaker two, I had to install a capacitor to reduce the bass present when being used with a standard 8 ohm Motorola housed stand alone speaker. Wondering if I need to retain or remove that...maybe no housing means less bass?
